The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a statement Wednesday clarifying its support for Rep. Todd Akin in the Missouri Senate race and suggesting it might spend money to help elect him, after saying a month ago that it would not do so.
There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in peoples lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country, that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Sen. Claire McCaskill, NRSC executive director Rob Jesmer said. As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November, and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead.
The NRSC said after Akins controversial comments about legitimate rape last month that it would not spend money on his behalf this fall. The hope at the time was that the threat would force Akin out of the race and Republicans could replace him with a more electable nominee.
It didnt work, though, and the deadline for Akin to exit the race passed Tuesday. That means he will now officially appear on the ballot and Republicans have to deal with the situation as it stands.
Asked to clarify whether it might spend money on Akin, the committee declined to comment, citing a desire not to broadcast its strategy.

I’m a Missourian and I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again.
I happened to be watching the Akin interview that Sunday morning and was not taken aback by his notorious comment. I understood Akin was meaning to say forced rape, as opposed to statutory rape.
And as a woman, I understand the complex female reproductive system and am aware that stress and, most certainly, trauma CAN (can, not will) cause impending ovulation to be delayed or halted. No ovulation means no pregnancy.
Does that mean pregnancy will not occur in case of rape? Of course not! Trauma may lessen the possibility, however if ovulation has already occurred shortly before unprotected intercourse, no matter if it is rape or consensual sex, conception is likely to occur.
Todd Akins gaffe was not worthy of destruction of his political career. He did not do anything illegal or immoral or malicious. He did not deliberately disparage women who were impregnated by rape. His words were sadly misconstrued by some people and deliberately distorted by political operatives in efforts to affect the November election.
Both well said and right on target!
Good news — just heard that DeMint’s PAC just sent the Akin campaign a considerable contribution of $200,000.
Good news indeed! Let us all hope the other so-called “Republican orgs.” do likewise. And SOON!!!
