The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a statement Wednesday clarifying its support for Rep. Todd Akin in the Missouri Senate race and suggesting it might spend money to help elect him, after saying a month ago that it would not do so.
There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in peoples lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country, that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Sen. Claire McCaskill, NRSC executive director Rob Jesmer said. As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November, and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead.
The NRSC said after Akins controversial comments about legitimate rape last month that it would not spend money on his behalf this fall. The hope at the time was that the threat would force Akin out of the race and Republicans could replace him with a more electable nominee.
It didnt work, though, and the deadline for Akin to exit the race passed Tuesday. That means he will now officially appear on the ballot and Republicans have to deal with the situation as it stands.
Asked to clarify whether it might spend money on Akin, the committee declined to comment, citing a desire not to broadcast its strategy.
Establishment Republicans generally believe that the race is lost, but polling has shown that Akin trails McCaskill only by single digits, and other Republicans have suggested they might still have a chance to win the seat.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), for example, jumped on board with Akin on Wednesday and has encouraged his party to do the same. Newt Gingrich has also raised money for Akin.
Other Republicans have clarified

Wow. Not a single pro Republican comment at the bottom of that article. Why do we post Washington Compost articles again?
Screw Akin. IF he’s so stupid as to say “legitimate rape” then he’s going to become an issue in the future. I’d vote against McCaskill if I lived in Missouri, but an ignorant boob like Akin is more of a liability than an assest to the conservative cause.
“...but an ignorant boob like Akin is more of a liability than an assest to the conservative cause.”
No, people like you are. You are NOT conservative if you are bashing Akin.
Thank God YOU don’t live in Missouri. Akin voted to repeal Obamacare 30 times..McCackles is for it; Akin voted against Cash for Clunkers; against the death tax; against the Wall Street Bailouts; FOR a balanced budget ammendment to the constitution and he has a 100% pro life rating and an A rating with the National Rifle Association. He also voted against the NO Child Left Behind fiasco which angered some of the gop establishment and Akin was right.
He apologized on national tv. How many other politicians make gaffes and NEVER apologize? GO AKIN!
If that’s where it went they didn’t lose much.
This really is not a surprise...although I thought they would do this under the radar rather than openly like this.
agree, about time someone in the RNC comes to their senses, remember nice guys finish last.....give em hell and goooo Akin!!!!
not really, i’d much rather support him any day than McLame or Mittens or the like.
“We need politicians like Akin in the Senate.”
Amen to that and just as importantly, we need to get rid of Clair McCaskill and her ilk from the senate, the place is infested with them.
In my fondest daydreams I hope that the balance of power in the Senate comes out Republicans, 59 and Democrats 40. And that Todd Akins is the deciding vote in every issue that comes up.
THAT would be the ultimate vindication of Akin’s stand!
The way I look at it 6 seconds of saying something dumb doesn’t even begin to compare to 6 years of Clare being a dumb democrat.
Actually I have to admit I stole that from Newt, hehe. Me thinks the establishment GOP protests too much, Akin must be an awesome conservative and I’ll proudly vote for him in November.
BUMP that. I agree 100%.
I still cannot believe that one (relatively minor) gaffe by Akin sent the GOPe into a hand-wringing conniption fit and had them running from the Democrat "mainstream" newsrooms like scared little bunnies. Pathetic.
I admire Akin's guts for standing up and telling those cowards (including a few around here) to go play in the street.
Go, Todd.

Well, I think it’s a matter of pragmatism now. As Akin has stayed in past the deadline, it’s either support him or concede the race to McCaskill without a fight.
Personally, I think the party should support him, if only because of the stakes involved. I wouldn’t necessarily feel that way if this was some minor state level post or even his old House seat. I think Akin’s chances were irreparably harmed by his comments, and I don’t share the view that he stayed in as a matter of principle. But in politics, you have to pick your battles. Control of the Senate is up for grabs this year, and the GOP can ill-afford to pass up any opportunity to gain another Senate seat, even if it isn’t the lock that it was a couple months ago.

That’s right; he was in good shape to win his race, and the Dem media saw a chance to pounce & took it. It will be awkward for those Repubs who called on him to step down if he wins...
“remember nice guys finish last...”
True, but I want Romney to appear “above the fray” (as Obama did in 2008) while his attack dogs rip Obama apart; Rush & Newt are doing a good job.
Hopefully, Reinhold Probe-us, of the RNC will loosen the purse strings. Perhaps even return the $5 million he pull from Akin’s campaign fund. It ain’t too late...
I get tons of stuff from the NSRC including phone calls. The last caller got a very long piece of my mind. I went on and on and on and on and on about the betrayal of Todd Aiken. I made him swear to deliver my tirade up his chain of command
The message was that I could with the flick of my mouse contribute directly to all Senate candidates and especially those who are conservative including Todd Aiken. In reality the NSRC is obsolete in a day when it is easy to give to whomever supports your views, home state or foreign state. Until Aiken is supported forget any money from me to the NSRC
Perhaps they received that message from enough others to matter
If you were trying to verbally differentiate between rape determined by physical force and a rape determined by statute (i.e. statutory rape) what would YOU call it?
Legitimate rape?
Real rape?
Actual rape?
Inquiring minds want to know.
