Romney Stops Pulling Punches
FOX News ^ | 09/26/2012 | Chris Stirewalt

Whatever Democratic skew may exist in the public polling on the presidential race, there’s no question about the current trajectory of the 2012 campaign: Republican Mitt Romney, who has steadily trailed by a small margin, is losing ground. Conservatives and the Romney campaign may say that the swing state polls which shows a widening lead for Obama are out of whack, but the trend is unmistakable. A month ago in must-win Ohio, Romney trailed in the Quinnipiac University poll commissioned by the New York Times and CBS News by 6 points. It’s now 10 points.

Polls may not be predictive, but even a poll that doesn’t reflect the actual condition of the electorate can still show you the trend line. And right now, there aren’t any indications that Romney is closing the gap. Romney may be closer than a double-digit deficit, but he’s sure not where he needs to be.

Romney’s attack slogan on President Obama has been “Obama isn’t working,” but it’s clear that Romney’s strategy hasn’t been working.

What we need now, as much or more than even a conclusive win in the Presidential debates, is for Romney to go over the heads of the gate-controllers of the major media outlets, and put on a prime-time appeal DIRECTLY to the American TV audience, in the manner of Ronald Reagan in 1980. That single act on Reagan’s part finally parted the fog and distorted atmosphere surrounding him, and presented the picture Reagan wanted, to the wider part of the public.

Expensive, yes, Probably subject to much resistance on the part of the major networks and cable carriers, yes. But the funds spent there would be more than justified in terms of redeeming the VERY sacred right to speak freely and frankly in this country.

There is much at stake and the hour grows late.

The trend IS unmistakable - over-sample Dems in most polls based on 2008 turnout and you are relatively guaranteed to have polls skewed. You don't need to have a degree in mathematics to understand what the inevitable polling results show.

I don’t get it, everything I see says Romney wins big. Apathetic and apolitical FB friends, some folks I have known for years, are posting Romney/Ryan stuff. This morning CBS said Baraq Hussein was up by 10 in Ohio; that would make a cat laugh. I don’t believe a single thing about Obama’s huge margin over Romney..

If what you’re saying were true, would Romney have to “take off the gloves”? He knows he’s behind and see no choice but to be more aggressive. Too little, too late in my opinion.

We have to stop kidding ourselves by claiming there is no slippage in some of the swing states. The only reliable way to truly know what the “polls are showing” is to watch the behavior of the two campaigns. The fact that R&R are hitting Ohio hard now with new messaging and a more aggressive tone implies their internal polling shows them losing ground there.

Chris Stirwalt is the Fox “polling” expert who came up with the nerdy “twitter meter” during the conventions. If you can create poll results using tweets, then I guess you can do it with anything. Fox is in the Obama tank.

The trouble with waiting to go on the offense until after you fall behind is the media will then frame it as “desperation”

Too bad so many “purists” here on FR don’t see it that way.

They’d rather see the country go down in flames than compromise their precious “principles”.

What morons they are.

I believe the mainstream media is tuning Romney out. You never see his campaign events covered unless he's making a "gaffe" or otherwise causing controversy. Mainstream media is definitely in cahoots with the Obama campaign and doing whatever they can get away with to get him re-elected. I mean, Romney can suddenly transform himself into the second coming of Ronald Reagan on the stump and you will never see it on mainstream media.

That all said, there are ways for Romney to go over the heads of the mainstream media gatekeepers.

One way is to do what Sarah Palin has been doing for the past year or so. Put out messages on social media. These will get tweeted and re-tweeted so that millions of Americans will see the messages on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc. Like Palin, just keep the messages simple and to the point. This is a great way to communicate to the American people and I don't know why Romney's campaign haven't thought of this - even if they just have somebody ghostwriting the messages for Romney.

Wrong.

Murdoch Jr. is over Fox Entertainment. The people who bring you “The Simpsons”.

Daddy Murdoch has twice stated that Roger Ailes will have complete control over Fox News.

Or don’t you read the “Wall Street Journal”?

Actually, the smart way to have played the race would be to go neck and neck, then pull it out toward the end. You don't want to peak too early.

Romney is ratcheting it up a little one week before the debate. Good timing IMO.

You are correct, and I am surprised more people do not recognize it. Chick-fil-A day was amazing in Western PA. I have never seen more people turn out for anything. I waited over an hour in the drive through and this is Western PA where Dems have a huge margin in registered voters. I think there is a ground swell much larger than the Tea Party vote in 2010. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Fox News. Let’s see, it has been reported by Gerome Corsi in the past week that the House of Saud was intricately involved in providing the obozo the means to attain higher education. I understand that a member of the house of Saud owns 1/3 of the Fox news corp. More propaganda.

I am just reporting what I read on the fox news website over the weekend. If that article was wrong it was wrong. No one knows what to believe any longer... whether printed or on the air. The media lies and fox is only marginally better than the rest. I know... I watched it on C-Band satellite when it first started up... it has changed.

Just saw a clip of him in Ohio, railing against Obama’s commitment to the Greek path. He seemed to have some fire in his belly. Good to see.”

Finally!

Obama is running by repeating his failed broken promises from 2008 as if we forgot how many promises he broke over the last 4 years.Obama has NO PLAN to create jobs. NOTHING but more of the same lies and broken promises.

If Romney hammers on this hard, Obama will just be a stuck pig, squealing. Obama’s got NOTHING when it comes to the critical question:

“WHO CAN FIX OUR BROKEN ECONOMY?”

It’s not enough for Willard the Bland to say he’ll be a better technocrat i.e. manager of the welfare state than Obama. He has to tell the American public why Obama is such a disaster. And I don’t mean just because Obama likes high taxes. He has to get into Obama’s core leftist philosophy.

Like Rush said, R&R need to go after Bambi's Ideology...and explain to the simpletons why that Ideology is bad for the economy. D’Souza should be his main adviser and in his ear every day till the election.
