Basically he’s saying “It’s okay by me if you pass laws restricting freedom of speech and criminalizing the criticism of religion. Just give me some cover, and make it apply to all religions, not just Islam.”

There is a former and early President whose words also need to be reviewed, for they provide an expanded and historical overview of America's history as it relates to the events playing out before our eyes today.

Any intelligent discussion of where we are as a nation in 2012 should include the writings and words of America's Founders on competing world views then existing and now competing for dominance in our affairs.

A good beginning might be a FR thread from the Year 2004 and the links provided therein.

Because our schools have not taught the ideas of liberty versus competing ideas of tyranny in whatever form they may appear, understood at America's founding, but censored from the nation's textbooks for decades now, we are adrift and in danger of losing the battle of ideas.

America's Founders understood the competing visions and what John Quincy Adams identified as the various "laws of nations" and how the Declaration of Independence's philosophy and the American Constitution fitted into such a world.

A reading of his complete "Jubilee" Address, delivered in 1839 by invitation of the New York Historical Society, would be a beginning, as well as his writings referred to in the thread cited above. Both are linked in that thread.

This was the "money quote" for me:

"...remember that Muslims have suffered the most at the hands of extremism"

WTF! Order up the commercials for Florinda and New York with Obama saying this as they run a collage of 9/11, the Holocaust, the Pentagon attack, etc behind him!

This clown needs to be removed now ... I am to the point that, yes, I believe even Joe Biden would be better!

Why is this not a first amendment issue? The Administrative Branch is trying to run interference for Islam. Duplicity at its finest.

Actually I think you took him out of context. The heading is out of context of the paragraph you quoted. And the paragraph itself is out of context of the entire speech. At least the parts I read, Obama actually did a fair job of defending free speech. Full Speech

Some parts you left out....

"And yet the turmoil of recent weeks reminds us that the path to democracy does not end with the casting of a ballot. Nelson Mandela once said: “to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” True democracy demands that citizens cannot be thrown in jail because of what they believe, and businesses can be opened without paying a bribe. It depends on the freedom of citizens to speak their minds and assemble without fear; on the rule of law and due process that guarantees the rights of all people."

"I know there are some who ask why we don’t just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech. Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. Moreover, as President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so. Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views – even views that we disagree with.

"We do so not because we support hateful speech, but because our Founders understood that without such protections, the capacity of each individual to express their own views, and practice their own faith, may be threatened. We do so because in a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities. We do so because given the power of faith in our lives, and the passion that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech – the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy, and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect.

"I know that not all countries in this body share this understanding of the protection of free speech. Yet in 2012, at a time when anyone with a cell phone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button, the notion that we can control the flow of information is obsolete. The question, then, is how we respond. And on this we must agree: there is no speech that justifies mindless violence.

"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an Embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.

Those who slander the prophet of Islam must not have a future.

Those who slander the prophet of Islam should be killed.

Hmmmm - not much of a difference, really.

I could well imagine the Libyan terrorists chanting something like this when they raiding our embassy and slaugtering Americans.

Barack Obama has no right as a human being, even as the POTUS - telling any other person what they can or cannot say, think or write.

That’s where this is ultimately going. “Imagine there’s no Heaven...no hell below...above only sky...imagine no religion...”

He wants control and lots of it.

Who decides what is the definition of slander against the Prophet? How can someone who lives in a country that recognizes the right of free speech to be inalienable declare that we should be intolerant of intolerance? Free speech should not be limited because somone perceives their speech is "slander." Any criticism of Islam is now slander?

Self-censorship is the worst censorship of all.
