Aaron Broussard has capitulated. He disclosed via his attorney that he plans to plead guilty Tuesday to corruption charges stemming from his six-year administration of Jefferson Parish government.
The former parish president, one of the dominant figures in Jefferson politics over the past three decades, will admit conspiring in 2003 to hire his girlfriend into a deadhead job that reaped the couple a total of $323,308 over six years and to stealing about $28,000, her excess pay for one year, defense attorney Robert Jenkins said.
Broussard, 63, is the biggest fish of five netted in the federal investigation that ensnared his administration beginning in 2009. But if he agrees to cooperate with his prosecutors, he could deliver more. Defense lawyers not connected to his case say the government is surely interested in his testimony in a related inquiry into the River Birch Inc., the landfill company that won a $160 million garbage contract during his administration.
Neither prosecutors nor Jenkins would discuss details of his plea, however. "I don't want to go through it until it's finalized," Jenkins said.
Jenkins' comment came after he announced Monday during a pre-trial conference with U.S. District Judge Hayden Head Jr. that Broussard plans to confess to two charges in the 27-count indictment against him. That will end Broussard's three-year effort to resist a conviction. Trial had been scheduled for Nov. 5, but Jenkins and assistant U.S. attorneys Matthew Chester, Daniel Friel and Brian Klebba plan to withdraw all pending motions in the case.
Broussard, wearing a striped black tie and striped, dark gray suit, gave no indication before the hearing of his intentions, spending 20 minutes discussing with a reporter his family, his health and his colorful undergraduate days at Louisiana State University.

What goes around, comes around. Justice finally done.
Did he run on a political party ticket or just buy his way into the office?
The “no mentioning of party” rule applies.
No mention of party in title, subtitle, first sentence, or first paragraph...therefore its a democrat.
Huge Democrat.
You knew he was corrupt and dirty has hell when he was crying and carrying on about Katrina.
your'e kidding? It's a joke. This guy should be put into an unairconditioned prison in Death Valley with only bread and water for the rest of his miserable, corrupt life.
This POS made the singular decision to order ALL pump operators out of Jefferson Parish as Katrina moved in. Most of them wanted to stay. He threatened them with their jobs. I saw him saying such on local TV as Katrina moved in. He sounding like a raving, deranged lunatic. This man is truly and absolutely insane.
Most of Jefferson would NOT have flooded if this idiot was the least bit rational.[this is the non-breach flooding]
His EVIL decision resulted in an additional $500M in damage caused by just the flooding..
I have elder relatives whose lives were shortened (they are now deceased) because of the stressed caused by dealing with the flooding resulting from his decision.
Words cannot fully express the utter hatred I have for this utterly corrupt and evil human being. He should have ALL his assets seized.
To top it off, after Katrina he used some funds to hire over two dozen "code inspectors" and 18 new trucks.
His legacy is that these sadistic inspectors rove the Parish with glee, looking to fine and harass the good citizens of this Parish. They measure and pronounce in local papers the "success" of millions in new fines!
Broussard is a leftist who is mentally deranged and utterly corrupt.
Party affiliation not mentioned a single time in entire article. Could it be because an elected Republican is as rare as hen’s teeth in New Orleans and surrounding area?
Has anybody ever determined how much of the past (prior to Katrina) 50 years of levee maintenance actually was spent upon levee maintenance rather than beads, booze, babes and bribes (not necessarily in that order)? Given that NOLA has seen a bit of corruption since way before Huey Long, I presume that the percentages are levee .01, corruption 99.99 or thereabouts.
Yet they still blame Bush ..., you just can’t fix STUPID!
"Wilkinson had been charged with 22 crimes. But he struck a deal last week with the government to cooperate in exchange for prosecutors recommending a reduction in his sentence. The ultimate is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, but maximum penalties are rare in federal court for first-time offenders. The exact sentence is up to Head, who will consider complicated federal guidelines before punishing Wilkinson on Feb. 25.
"I think the calculation of these guidelines will be a challenge," Head said. Wilkinson's camp is hoping for no more than six months' prison time, possibly just probation.
A Louisiana politician caught being a crook! I’m
SHOCKED, SHOCKED, I tell you!
No, Republicans are now quite common in Jefferson Parish. Broussard was one of the old guard, those Democrats who clung to office through name recognition and by keeping their dirty secrets buried.
I forget the details, but I think there was a stretch of time when three *consecutive* Louisiana insurance commissioners went to prison.
I hope you mean elected! If so, I'm happy for the change. I believe in a 2-party minimum political system. NOLA has been, like many large cities in the US, too long a plantation for the Democrats. Not a good state of affairs!
Story written by the Times Pick-Your-Nose newspaper. Figures.
There is a lingering quirk in south Louisiana, though - sort of a knee-jerk political support for the candidate with the French-Acadian sounding surname. That's why Kathleen Blanco began using her maiden name, Babineaux, when she ran for governor. That factor certainly helped Broussard get elected.
A true LYING SACK OF CRAP!!!!! Finlly he will get JUSTICE done to him.
Between me, you and the bayou, Broussard is getting a much bigger break than he deserves: St. Rita’s nursing home
