A Houston police officer shot and killed a schizophrenic, wheelchair-bound double amputee threatening people with a pen at a group home for the mentally ill after authorities said the man advanced on the officer's partner.
The shooting occurred early Saturday morning after police responded to a call that resident Brian Claunch was acting aggressively after his caretaker refused to give him a cigarette and a soda, the owner of the home and police said.
"The officers made verbal commands for the suspect to drop whatever he had in his hand, to stay still and to speak with the officers, but the suspect continued to make threats," Jodi Silva, a police spokeswoman, said.
Claunch, who lost an arm and a leg in a train accident, trapped one of the officers with his wheelchair in the corner of a room and attempted to stab the officer with an object that turned out to be a pen.
Officer Matt Marin, "in fear of the safety of his partner and the safety of himself, discharges his duty weapon, striking the suspect," Silva said.

How many of you have heard of the 21 ft rule?
I have heard of it. Does that apply to one-armed guys in wheel chairs? Did he have a Tim Allen supercharged chair? ROTFLMAO
In fact it was a little bit frightening.
LOL!
You're kidding right?
I'm not agitated at all. In fact I see more agitation from those of you who are rushing to condemn this shooting based solely on sketchy reports put out by the news media. Me, I can see both sides.
If I'm within "inches to a foot" of you (as per reports), I bet I can connect with whatever is in my hand faster than you can push me away, wheelchair or no.
Speaking of seeing both sides that brings up a question I have. Cop 1 is in a corner. Guy in wheelchair has him backed into it. Cop 2 must have been behind wheelchair. Can someone help me with the geometry of the line of fire here? LOL
Now you’re saying that the ‘21 ft. rule’ was a non-sequitur with no relevance to this situation!?! I take it you only threw that in as a deflection from any sober analysis of the situation then.
Nope.
Not kidding.
Post 29 and post 39 are both in defense of an obviously bad shooting.
If the cop couldn’t defend themself from a guy in a wheelchair who had only ONE arm and ONE leg (That’s 1 as in singular you know, right?) then why are they a cop anyway?
And you are trying to justify it with “Oh, they were trapped.”
Seriously, give me a break.
Probably.
All the cop had to do was grab the (single, one, 1) leg and pull it upwards, tip the guy over, and his (single, one, 1) arm waving would have been done.
One legged man at an arse kicking contest anyone?
And they have batons still, right?
A huge Maglite?
This could have been over in so many other ways, quickly and without death.
But hey, those assault wheelchairs are just so dangerous and need to be banned.
Both sides become clear when you look through the big end of your binoculars. ;^)
I know!
It’s ridiculous.
My grandmother had an electric wheelchair.
It was capable of being moved by pushing as well as using the motor.
And for the dude to follow the cop with his chair, he would have had to either use his hand on a joystick, or push with a leg in reverse.
Either way, he would have posed no serious threat during that action.
As for mentioned 21 foot rule, move the heck away from the dude in the chair.
It isn’t hard to do.
Heck, the hoverround chairs will tip over if pushed from the right direction, instant ground turtle.
Anyone excusing this...
*groan*
Try to snatch this pen from my hand, Grasshoppa.

Uh, wha? Just drop it, old man.
LOL!
Battle of Eckythump.

Master Po pulled that joke on me already. There is nothing in your hand.
Seriously, Master, are you guys really that hard up for laughs?
Good comment. I read these officer-shoots-dog stories and I cannot remember reading any comment about the good probability of dogs smelling fear in the donut specialists.
I can explain it to you, but I can’t comprehend it for you...
The 21 foot rule is about avoiding getting stabbed. That is its purpose.
If someone is “inches to a foot” (various news reports) from you, with a metal object in their hand, then it looks like they’re going to be able to stab you.
I shouldn’t have to point out the obvious truism; That “inches to a foot” is well INSIDE of 21 feet!
Officer Marin saw his partner in that situation and reacted accordingly.
It DOESN’T MATTER if the partner wound up in that situation through their own incompetence, or whether or not they might have been able to overpower Mr Stabby. The reality still is that they, according to Marin, appeared to be in immediate danger. Now maybe that’s true and maybe it isn’t, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt until I have reason to believe otherwise.
If I was a cop I wouldn’t want to be stabbed. Having said that, this cop wasn’t being attacked with a cutless or samuri sword. He likely had a baton, or mag light that he has been trained to use as a weapon to disarm perps. Combine said training with the perps physical condition, makes this shoot patently absurd.
A cop that is within arm's reach of a one-armed man in a wheelchair should be able to see what is in his only hand.
The reality still is that they, according to Marin, appeared to be in immediate danger. Now maybe thats true and maybe it isnt, but Im going to give him the benefit of the doubt until I have reason to believe otherwise.
You have been given more than half a dozen good reasons to believe otherwise but you have chosen to stick to an entirely irrational position.
I am absolutely amazed that I have to point out (again) that the '21 ft. rule' is utterly irrelevant if you have already stipulated that the person is only "inches to a foot" away.
Logic is definitely not your forte.
