Average retail gasoline prices have more than doubled under President Obama, according to government statistics, rising from $1.84 per gallon to $3.85 per gallon.

The average gasoline price is calculated by the Energy Information Agency, and shows that over the past 43 months of President Obama’s term retail gasoline prices have more than doubled, rising from an average of $1.84 per gallon to $3.85 per gallon.

Rising gasoline prices were particularly prevalent in August, which saw a 9.0 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for gasoline, a rise that almost entirely accounts for the general increase in prices seen by families across the country over the past month.

When I bring up the difference in gas prices, the black people at work say “the president can’t change gas prices”!!

I remember last time gas prices got really high, in the mid-2000s. All my Lib neighbors were complaining how GWB was *intentionally* keeping the price of oil high to "enrich his oil buddies." And now, just a few years later, these same Libs are saying the president has no power to influence the price of oil, a commodity traded in the global market.

The frightening thing is, they so no contradiction at all in what they said then vs what they say now. Their capacity for self-delusion is stunning.

One possible reason is that $1.84 gas in January 2009 was a bit of an abberation. Throughout much of 2008, gas prices were about where they are now. They collapsed during the financial crisis in the fall, as fears of a global recession slashed demand for oil (oil/gas prices are often counter-cyclical, for that very reason). As that acute crisis ended-replaced by the stagnant near-recession caused/perpetuated by Obama’s policies-the low prices from the peak of the crisis naturally rose. I don’t think that accounts for all of the increase, and there is plenty of room to criticize Obama on this issue (like all issues), but the end of the acute financial crisis of 2008/2009 accounts for at least some of the “doubling” of prices.

As much as I hate this administration, that’s a lie. Gas was about the same as it is now. I made the kids ride the school bus when gas hit $2.50 so that was about 8 years ago. When Katrina hit, gas rose to nearly $4. Yesterday, it was $3.37.

While somewhat accurate, this article is a little disingenuous. Sure, gas prices per gallon were about $1.84 in January 2009 when Oh!Brother took office, but the price of gas in August 2008 near the end of Bush's second term was $4.12.

See: Historical Gas Price Charts

The truth is that gas prices had hovered about between $1.00 and $1.60 per gallon all throughout the 80s and 90s. Once Bush took office in 2000, the price per gallon started its steady climb to where we are today.

Yes, Bush had a lot of spikes, especially in his last 3 years, but Obama’s stayed consistently high for his 4 years.

You may not think the article is fair to Obama but it was fact that gas was $1.84 when he took office.

Nowhere did I say the article was fair or unfair to anyone, so please don't put words into my mouth. I merely said it was slanted.

I am not a fan of either Bush or Obama. IMO both were poor stewards of the American economy and both implemented policies that made it worse, not better.

I would also add that the proof of Bush's and Obama's poor stewardship is reflected in the price of gasoline, which had remained fairly stable in the 20 years preceding their taking office and has risen steadily since.
