MOSCOW Soviet leaders used to prefer Republicans to Democrats, in the belief that Republicans were tough but more sincere and, once they made a promise, were more likely to deliver on it.
There has been a whiff of that old way of thinking in recent remarks by President Vladimir Putin, even though plenty has changed in Russias relations with the United States. Speaking to reporters last week, Putin said he appreciates GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romneys bluntness in his denunciations of Russia because thaSarcastic? Maybe just a bit.
That Mr. Romney considers us enemy number one and apparently has bad feelings about Russia is a minus, but, considering that he expresses himself bluntly, openly and clearly, means that he is an open and sincere man, which is a plus, Putin said after a meeting with Serbias president.
We will be oriented toward pluses, not minuses, Putin said. And I am actually very grateful to him for formulating his position in a straightforward manner. t stance lets Russia know where it stands, and reinforces Putins opposition to a missile defense shield in Europe.

I doubt it. Besides, Putin thinks he’s a god.
The last thing Romney needs right now is an endorsement from Putin. Vlad needs to stick with Barry.
The unofficial deal they had with Obama is in danger.
Putin has already endorsed Obama, so don’t worry.
I can see Putin’s thinking here. He wants to be the next Stalin, have people cheer his name, build his statues, and have a portrait of him on their walls. How will he achieve glory by defeating a weak loser like Bozo? He needs a challenge. Someone who will stand up to him. Hopefully he’ll get more than he bargains for when Romney wins.
Lots of little gods running around out there today.
Even the Russians are tired of our 'teleprompter' president.
Yep. Ahmedinijad, Putin, Kim Jong Un, Chavez. It’s the new age of tyrants.
I agree. Communists need a boogey man the way the old Soviet Union had the Americans and the DemocRATS have the Republicans. Without being able to convince the unwashed masses that the “government” is protecting them from the boogey man, the communists have nothing to offer.
It’s also very disturbing to see Russia meeting with Serbia’s leader. He would have been an ally if not for slick willy, just like all those other countries destroyed by communism, Poland, Lithuania, etc.
Of course Putin wants Russia to be the number one enemy of the US. He misses the Soviet Union’s world status during the Cold War.
You have that right. Prime example. China’s current frenzy over the ‘evil’ Japanese.
Yeah. Romney won’t have the FLEXABILITY of Obama after the election to sway senators into another shitty treaty.
Spot on.
He'd rather deal with an honest man who puts his cards straight up than a shyster with friendly smile on his face and a derringer under the table.
You did not mention Obama.
I don’t see that, is he authoritarian, yes, but I certainly don’t see him wanting the “Cult of Personality” that Stalin had. No more so than Obama, at least.
He was reacting in part to the actions of the Soviets who had been finding devious ways to stab China in the back for about ten years while professing "fraternal friendship." But still.
That’s why also the Soviets greatly respected Reagan.
