Political reporters on Twitter are saying they are standing by for a Romney media availability on the video released today by Mother Jones of Romney at a May fundraiser speaking frankly of his thoughts on Obama's base voters and their entitlement mentality, aka the 47% who pay no federal income taxes.
The media and GOP-E have jumped ugly on Romney tonight.
Steve Holland, Reuters: Romney at press avail to respond to video says his comments weren't "elegantly stated," and "could have said it in a more effective way."
she is one of those who jumpeed on the FREE REPUBLIC to hate Romney, and never was a Romney supporter going to be allow to support him at this site..but the owner changed his mind after all the Primaries and MITT became #1...
guess who supports those four annual fundraiser here??? yep bet they are ROMNEY~~RYAN supporters...
so I now let a few weep in their milk
Ask him how many times Hoefling has been married, and where he works.
So are those low wage employees who don’t make enough to pay fed taxes, part of what he considered the freeloading 47%?
Actually, yes. Your 84year old mother should.
In my opinion, EVERYONE should be paying taxes to some extent.
The problem we have today is only 53% pay for 100%. The 47% not paying anything have no idea how much stuff costs and keep thinking stuff is FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
It’s not FREE. Everyone should have some skin in the game and I mean EVERYONE. In the case of your mother, I would say she should have to pay $500 total. Very small number, but symbolic enough that she and everyone else understands that this stuff costs money. It may not seem fair, but this is a simple numbers game.
Right now we’re down to 16 employed American for every one receiving disability. Years ago that number was 65. We cannot have a society in which the few are paying for all. It will implode on itself. I realize $500 of $17,000 is a lot to some (2.9%), but it is important that people (especially those not paying) understand how much waste there is and how much stuff costs.
If a person pays for something and sees the waste, they get mad. If a person isn’t paying for something, the waste is ignored as someone else’s problem.
Exactly Kevao. It’s been a big issue with me as well. You are exactly right that back in the day it was about 33% to 35% paid something in income taxes. Now 47% to 48% pay nothing. We are enticing a dependency society and the tipping point is very close.
Thanks for your reply.
It seems to me that unless Mitt has become a tool for those advising him, he OWNS this message.
As someone that has been in the financial services industry for over 25 years, I know how to communicate a message or concept. Mitt knows this, since it should be in his nature.
Speak clearly, directly on topic and with succinctness.
It’s not rocket science.
If he is advised to water down this position, he is toast.
K.I.S.S.
“47% is a lot of people, and I’d bet at least half of those simply do not make enough working to pay fed taxes.”
“Income taxes” is a bit of a deceptive term. Everybody who makes an income in America pays federal taxes-—in the form of payroll taxes. Payroll taxes start on the first dollar earned. There is no exemption until you get above the maximum earnings level of about $120,000, and it is a flat rate of about 15.3% (if an employee, 50% is given directly to the government by your employer). Over 40% of federal taxes on income come from payroll taxes. Most Americans pay more in payroll taxes than income taxes.
And anyone who imagines that those payroll taxes are being segregated so that they only go for Social Security and Medicare is living in LaLa land. They are used to pay the government’s bills just like any other tax money.
You mean......there is no........Lock..Box...?
Everyone does pay taxes to some extent.
You seem to be suggesting more taxes need to be paid to a wasteful, reckless spending corrupt government.
Those on the lower end incomes or fixed incomes are being squeezed to death, with skyrocketing food, gas and increase of nearly everything going up except their incomes. The government knows this, and why their going after the wealthy, who can obviously survive the hit as opposed to those who can't even afford to fill their gas tanks.
Would it not make more sense to dramatically reduce the size of government and radically cut government spending, cutting government programs at all levels, giving even the wealthy a break?
YOUR POST will royally PI$$ a lot of long time FR poster off..
and you can start with me...
THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THIS GOVERNMENT WASTES..and you want an 84 year old woman to return at least $300.00 annually..
YOUR NUTS..AND YOUR POST DATE HERE MAKES YOU A LIBERAL TROLL...
I could tell you to go and _ _ _ _ yourself but Clint Eastwood could say it better than me
I think the idea that EVERYONE should have some SKIN in the game is correct.
The game is our gov’t and their spending.
Here’s a horror story coming to a country under your feet.
Q. Who are the top 3 EMPLOYERS in the world ?
Answer:
1. The India railroad
2. The Chinese Red army
3. The UK Health Services
Where do you think the US will fall ?
“Would it not make more sense to dramatically reduce the size of government and radically cut government spending, cutting government programs at all levels, giving even the wealthy a break?”
Absolutel. And this time let’s not make our usual mistake of putting the cart before the horse and giving ourselves a tax break before we cut spending.
Of all the stupidity! Is he really trying to lose this election? He needs to stop getting pulled off message by his own actions!
If Carter had this kind of media support, he would have clobbered Reagan in 1980.
My vote for post of the day.
Sadly.
Number One:
Abolish the Dept. of Education
This should be left to the States.
Number Two:
The EPA should be cut in half at a minimum, again, back to the states.
Number Three:
Dept. of Labor should be abolished.
Number four:
Dept. of Health should be cut in half.
There is so much more.
Adopt a “fair tax” or “flat tax” and cut the IRS to the bone.
Everyone does pay taxes. I think the real problem here is, government knows damn well those who've had their hours slashed, lost jobs, eliminated benefits, and there are millions of them, while the cost of everything skyrockets, are being economically gang raped. Millions don't even have jobs...It's one of the reasons why the rich are the big targets now.
Are we going to raise taxes on some guy making 280 bucks a week who can't afford to fill his gas tank or go to a doctor and is a month behind in his rent?
What about dramatically reducing the size of government 60 percent? How about eliminating needless government departments and programs, eliminating foreign aid, eliminate unionized government, eliminate several million overpaid government bureaucrats who sit around collecting taxes and thinking up new taxes, fees and fines?
Taxes should be cut across the board for all, at every level and the only way to do this is rein in the all consuming, controlling, regulating corrupt government. Do this and the tens of millions out of jobs, or underemployed will start finding work again and won't mind putting bit of skin in the game. In the process, America could actually regain some of it's freedom, which is also being incrementally consumed by government.
