Walmart employees 'ripped up woman's $100 bills because they thought they were fake'

A mother who says Walmart employees intentionally humiliated her after wrongfully ripping up two of her $100 bills while believing they were fake is taking legal action against the store.

According to her complaint: 'The cashier inspected the $100 bill, turned to another cashier and had a brief discussion, and returned to her register telling Plaintiff that her money was "fake."

'The cashier proceeded to rip the $100 bill in half without performing any counterfeit detection tests. The metallic strip in the $100 bill was clearly visible.'

After marking the bill with the detection pen, revealing a yellowish colour across it, Ms Garcia said she explained to the cashier of that colour meaning it was legitimate, having previously worked in retail herself.

Detained at the front of the store while told the police had been called, Ms Garcia claims that adding to her humiliation, the employees told curious customers in passing that she was busted trying to use fake money.

After two hours at the front, police arrived around 4.15am and proceeded to inspect the bills in question.

Following a series of tests the first responding officer, identified as Officer Edwards, returned to Ms Garcia telling her that what the Walmart employee and manager had done was a 'terrible mistake.’

'He then approached the manager, who appeared upset by what he was told by Officer Edwards,' according to the complaint.

‘After speaking with Officer Edwards, Manager Russell approached Plaintiff and sarcastically stated that the police officers said the money was not counterfeit, though he disagreed.

‘At this time, he attempted to hand Plaintiff the two torn $100 bills he had misappropriated from her. When Plaintiff objected to receiving torn bills, Officer Edwards instructed Manager Russell to replace the bills he had wrongfully taken and destroyed.

...they also prevented her from leaving and destroyed her legal tender(breaking fed law)...so theft and unlawful inprisonment and destruction of federal property

Litigation is quite a reasonable response...

They shouldn't have ripped up the bills, since they constituted either legal tender or evidence. In either case, she has no standing to sue on those grounds. As for your other comments, I'll refer you to my replies already to made to others here.

I was just sitting here thinking about it, and I realized I haven’t walked into a Walmart in 6 years. And the last time I did walk into Walmart 6 years ago, they didn’t have what I was looking for.

Walmart destroys the competition with inferior products sold at lower prices, then, once the competition is gone, they enslave the public with higher prices and inferior products made in China! This type of capitalism is what turns the public against corporations!

Reminds me of the time a convenience store wouldn’t take my dollar coin because they “didn’t take Canadian money.”

I was in Las Vegas, attending a Networld/Interop, the day the government released the very first of the new $100 (big portrait). It was about 7:00am local time (9:00am for me), and I had some time to kill before my first seminar, so I thought I'd play a little blackjack. One of the other players at the table pulled out one of those new $100 bills, and the dealer had never seen one before, so he called the pit boss over, and pretty soon there was this big crowd of people passing around the bill. We all had a chance to look it over, and finally got back to playing after about 15 minutes!

:”dollar bills are the filthiest things in my wallet and feel like I have to wash my hands every time I touch one.”

Ditto! And then they disinfect them, with something that is heavily perfumed. Their lifetime is measured in months, after which they’re shredded, and dumped into landfills! Get rid of the filthy things! The coins only last about 100 years, and can be recycled! Saves a bunch of money in the long run. And you only have to carry a couple of them.

The Sacagawea dollar is pretty pathetic-looking. It makes her look like a peasant babysitter. The face on a coin should be dignified. The real Sacagawea probably looked more like a warrior, and the coin could have followed our tradition of really cool-looking Indian coins:

“I had an uncle who would regularly hand my kids fives, tens, and twenties that were twenty or thirty years old. My kids have tried to use them at those self check out places. They are rejected, all of the time.”

This is the part where I’m supposed to tell you that those bills were probably worth more than face value...

They’ve also been putting out the “Presidential” $1 coins for a few years now. They’re ugly as sin and I bet they really confuse cashiers.

ROFLOL...Walmart buys from the same suppliers that every store in the country buys from. Yes, they do put some smaller companies out of business with lower prices but that is called competition.

Specialty stores seem to survive and prosper against Walmart even though they also buy from the same suppliers. You have to figure out what the public wants and are willing to purchase for a higher price.

It must be so satisfying to lord it over those poor ignorant fools who have “probably never had a $100 bill of their own”. I wish I was special like you!

Illegally detained? Held against her will?

I would (as would others here probably) defend myself if a non-officer type tried to hold me against my will.

Things would probably get hairy.

WalmartS seems to have hired all the holders people who previously worked at nursing homes abusing old crackas.

Better they abuse the public at Walmart than they get hired to work in the DOJ. Remember the recent DOJ memo instructing them to seek out disabled, and particularly mentally disabled, attorneys?

I guess unlawful detention and public humiliation isn’t a big deal on whatever planet YOU come from.
