A mother who says Walmart employees intentionally humiliated her after wrongfully ripping up two of her $100 bills while believing they were fake is taking legal action against the store.
According to her complaint: 'The cashier inspected the $100 bill, turned to another cashier and had a brief discussion, and returned to her register telling Plaintiff that her money was "fake."
'The cashier proceeded to rip the $100 bill in half without performing any counterfeit detection tests. The metallic strip in the $100 bill was clearly visible.'
After marking the bill with the detection pen, revealing a yellowish colour across it, Ms Garcia said she explained to the cashier of that colour meaning it was legitimate, having previously worked in retail herself.
Detained at the front of the store while told the police had been called, Ms Garcia claims that adding to her humiliation, the employees told curious customers in passing that she was busted trying to use fake money.
After two hours at the front, police arrived around 4.15am and proceeded to inspect the bills in question.
Following a series of tests the first responding officer, identified as Officer Edwards, returned to Ms Garcia telling her that what the Walmart employee and manager had done was a 'terrible mistake.
'He then approached the manager, who appeared upset by what he was told by Officer Edwards,' according to the complaint.
After speaking with Officer Edwards, Manager Russell approached Plaintiff and sarcastically stated that the police officers said the money was not counterfeit, though he disagreed.
At this time, he attempted to hand Plaintiff the two torn $100 bills he had misappropriated from her. When Plaintiff objected to receiving torn bills, Officer Edwards instructed Manager Russell to replace the bills he had wrongfully taken and destroyed.

That said, I would rather have Ronald Reagan or George Washington on them than that Indian Shoeshine girl.
Dont have to make a court case out of every incident.
Was an honest mistake, not malicious.
Pay the lady two hundred dollars and problem solved.
Wallmart can mail torn pieces to govt to get $200 back.
Actually, you are totally correct....WalMart can replace those torn 100 bills...so giving the customer back two non-torn 100 bills would not be a problem....
However, WalMart is not the brightest of companies...and their lower management probably is clueless about that. Heck, all WalMart work schedules are done at their corporate offices...not at their local stores
I had an uncle who would regularly hand my kids fives, tens, and twenties that were twenty or thirty years old. My kids have tried to use them at those self check out places. They are rejected, all of the time.
It is funny watching the teenager cashiers having to call over older managers to verify that the cash is real.
I used to work in a bank and we found more fake $20s than $100s. The counterfeit pen doesn’t work because they take $1s and $5s and bleach them, then reprint the larger denomination on it. Most people don’t know exactly what to look for when examining currency to determine if it’s counterfeit or not.
Under these circumstances it not illegal to confiscate retain the merchandise. They don't own it until it is legally paid for.
They should be destroyed. a billion is not much in the way of inflation defense, but it is a start.
I got stopped once on the way out of a walmart because they thought I shoplifted.
the stop lasted all of 5 minutes as I showed them my empty pockets and the receipt for the items I bought.
They apologized for the mistake and sent me on my way.
I guess I should have sued.
The Walmartophobe Brigadeers will be out in force for this thread.
Much of the Walmart disdain is centered on fear..... fear someone known will see you shopping there.
Vanity, all is vanity
Walmart is the best run corporation in the world and the standard against which others must measure up. Walmart is America at it’s very best.
Maybe true but the store does not lose as much money when they take in a fake twenty as they do a hundred. Many small stores cant afford to lose that kind of money.
Lose two hundred, win a million (from a lawsuit.)
Give a Leftist any kind of power, and he will abuse.
Petty little tyrants like this usually work for the government or seek to apply government authority somehow (like a bank teller who fancies himself as an agent for Homeland Security). They love enforcing Rules and Authority.
This is hard for a Canadian to understand. There was a lot of debate about the Loonie, when it was first minted; but they soon became very popular. When the Toonie was introduced, there was no debate — it was an instant success.
When you consider inflation, over about the past 5 decades, a dollar coin is worth what a nickel used to be worth. A five dollar coin (we might be getting one of those in Canada, soon) would be worth what a quarter was “back when”.
The real problem is having a pocket full of nearly-worthless pennies and nickels. Canada is no longer minting the one cent coin, because it costs a lot more to produce and circulate it, than it’s worth. It all comes down to a side-effect of inflation.
The larger coins proved very handy for vending machines and parking meters. Of course, with the move to digital transactions, all coins and small bills will soon be largely obsolete; and the issues with them will then be moot.
-——However, WalMart is not the brightest of companies.-——
Actually Walmart is the brightest company of all. There is no retail company that begins to have the where withall of Walmart. To argue differently is to be just blowing smoke
“Detained at the front of the store while told the police had been called”
Seems this may be the part that causes the biggest problem.
but they didnt give it back until directed to do by LEO. it appears they also prevented her from leaving and destroyed her legal tender(breaking fed law)...so theft and unlawful inprisonment and destruction of federal property.
Litigation is quite a reasonable response...
-——another $200 for her time, and maybe another $200——
Of course the reward above the initial $200 should be given as a Walmart debit card.
and now that i scrolled down i see 10 others said the same thing as I
;-)
