Republican activists are incredulous: Why can't Republican Mitt Romney seem to break open a tight race with President Barack Obama given the nation's sluggish economy and conservative enthusiasm to beat the Democrat?
"He ought to be killing Obama, and he's clearly not doing that," said 32-year-old R.J. Robinson, one of the thousands of activists attending the annual Values Voters Summit this weekend. "He should be doing better."
Added Mike Garner, a 27-year-old hawking "Reagan was right" buttons at the meeting: "If Romney loses this election, the party really needs to do some soul-searching."
Their sentiments were echoed in interviews with more than a dozen GOP activists and social conservative leaders who attended the annual gathering focused on social and cultural issues and sponsored by the Family Research Council.
The summit was filled with rhetoric meant to fire up the party's base voters. Romney needs them to turn out in force at the polls in November and, between now and then, to convince others to do the same through extensive get-out-the-vote grassroots canvassing in swing-voting states...

Obama doesn’t have to do a thing. His administration lies, they tell out-and-out mistruthes, and the do it with a smile and a dictate that the media just, for some reason doesn’t question and laps up like hungry housepets.
He doesn’t have to do a thing, the media is doing it for him. This election won’t be about Obama or Romney but the media.
Who are these Puritans you mouth of? In reality the Puritans were the NE Republican/Whigs that supported the destruction of the Southern States for mercantile gains. These friggin tools also imported and sold a majority of the slaves.
Conservatives realize.....Republicans don't.
Good stuff. Thanks. I agree. Romney is missing a great opportunity here to connect with “silent majority” Americans.
To the contrary, Newt was probably the one candidate in the mix that Obama could beat. Newt would have driven women out of the GOP camp in droves. He is toxic to most women. Probably something to do with the multiple wives, the cheating, the ugliness of his divorces, etc. Not to mention that the current trophy wife looks like something out of a wax museum. Men might not think much of it all but to most women, it's a big deal.
That all said, I never understood the appeal of Newt Gingrich on this forum. He's an establishment Beltway hack who is part of the problem in D.C. He may say all the right conservative things but in practice, he has a history of crossing the aisle and making backroom deals with the Democrats. He has enriched himself as a lobbyist (despite his denials of being a lobbyist).
As our nominee, Newt would have been a massive liability and all his dirty laundry would distract from the campaign and not only women, but many "moderates" would see Obama as the lesser of the two evils.
Lastly, to the Gloomy Guses and Debbie Downers on this thread, quit getting demoralized by these bogus polls. Not only are they oversampling Democrats but they are inflating the amount of undecideds and "prefer another candidate" voters. The vast amount of the undecideds are actually Romney voters. As for those who prefer another candidate...who? We don't have a Ross Perot running this year. The third party candidates are going to draw less than 1% of the vote. This means that 99%+ of the voters are going to choose between Romney and Obama.
Factor out the Democrats oversampling and Romney is ahead by 3-6 points. Shift 2/3 of the undecideds into Romney's column (and that's being conservative) and suddenly Romney is up 6-10 points.
Safe to say that Romney is running 6-10 points ahead at this time. But you don't have to take my word for it. Just look at where the campaigns are spending their time and money. Obama's campaign are spending their money in states they won handily in 2008 (Ohio, PA, Virginia, Michigan). Romney is spending in states like Iowa, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Colorado - all states that Obama won by 8-14 points in 2008. All those states are winnable for the GOP this year along with others like New Hampshire, Nevada and North Carolina.
don’t kid yourself....Romney is killing bambi....screw the polls, no one is expecting what is coming
I just can’t see Obama going over 48%, and I’m being generous.
I remember the polls in the George Bush vs John Kerry election, and they never showed Bush over 48% for most of the election cycle until the last week. And, if my memory serves me correctly, Bush won 52-48. I think the polls showed this the Sunday before the election and that is what ended up happening.

What did the polls say in 08?
The real poll will be on November 6th and not those fake polls from NBC, CBS, Pew, Quinnipiac, and even FoxNews, who have oversampled Democrats 7-10%. If you look at the internals it is easy to see. So if you think those lines were long at Chic-fil-lay appreciation day, with conservative Americans showing their support, wait for November 6th 2012, the day they kick Obama and all his socialist czars out of office. Theyre going to have to extend the hours for voting because theyll be coming in droves to finally put a nail into the coffin of the worst president in the history of America!
That outrage is worthy of its thread, if someone hasn’t done so already...
Earth to Stupid Party: Thanks to YOU doing nothing about tens of millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, flooding into our country and voting Dem, and thanks to YOU pandering to people who will never vote for you, while stabbing your base in the back, your party is going the way of the dodo bird. But hey, enjoy your cheap labor.
Palin could have, easily, if the GOP-E had not backstabbed her to death politically.
They both are here in Hampton roads. Obama’s ads are far more effective I think. Romney’s ad running now is sophomore av class stuff to me. Back when Kaine was elected governor, Jerry Kilgore had a ten point lead and I cringed when I saw his Mickey mouse sophomoric ads. Steadily, kaine caught him. I got a feeling that Romney is using the same damn media group. He’s running Mickey mouse negative ads. Sigh.
Sorry. But there is NO WAY Obama leads here in Alabama. Just no stinking way. We voted over 60% for that slug McCain to show that we are dumb, but NOT THAT STUPID to vote for the idiot Obama over the IDIOT McScream.
My thought as well. Not sure how you can call yourself an activist and not see the current polling for what it is.
In the meantime, Team Romney has yet to put the wheels on its wagon.
If I remember right, they showed Obama leading McCain in the final weeks of the election, after the financial meltdown that occurred in October of that year. I remember Karl Rove with his whiteboard showing Obama leading in states like North Carolina and Indiana and I didn’t believe that he would win those states. He did, in fact, win those states.
That’s why I don’t put crap on my cars and trucks. No lawn sign either. Same for the neighbors.
