“northern Californian explains a lot. Let me guess, Marin County.
Berkley grad.
No Piedmont and later Oakland, where his 90 yrs mother still live.
Nevada, Yolo and Alameda are in there, but I am not sure he ever lived in Marin.
According to Wikipedia he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco for two years so that may be where he learned Arabic.
He had a BA in history which is a good backgroud for the foreign service. Also it helps to know an exotic language. But maybe the lesson is to pick an exotic language whose speakers are not given to attacking embassies and murdering people.
Piedmont — Alameda County. I think he was born in San Francisco.
My immediate thought - that, Santa Cruz or Berkeley. So I looked it up - Marin Co guy - went to Berkeley. I'm sorry for him dying, but I honestly can't help but feel it began long ago. I hope he enjoyed the life he lived. It looks like he did because he obviously felt he was doing meaningful things and he tried to make a difference.

San Francisco went to Berkeley for law school....the guy is a well known homosexual
Let me give you a clue. People in Northern Cal don't include the bay area as part of Northern Cal, in fact the whole west coast is not considered Northern CA. The true northern Cal is over here on the slopes of the Sierra Neveda, North of Stockton on up to the border or Oregon. In fact the Northwest coast of CA is far more liberal than the southern half. If this guy had come from the real Northern Cal he would have been conservative as he** and would never have helped with the so called "Arab Spring".
Fat lot of good came from his embracing "the arab life" as the article put it. All it did was get him and others killed and the violence isn't over yet and won't be until we(the USA)responds with a power that will stop this sh** once and for all.
