According to Merriam Webster, the colloquialism “breadbasket” originated in 1753. Oxford gives that date use as a slang term for the stomach. Actual reference to a basket for holding bread goes bach to 1552.

I'll overlook Ryan's mis-speak (the breadbasket) but how can I
ever forgive him for succumbing to dog-whistles?
(the lefts meltdown has brought me no end of amusement!)

Liberals look at Websters Unabridged Dictionary and see racism in every single word.

California’s Central Valley was considered to be the “breadbasket” to the US before Nancy Pelosi and her minions cut off the water. Now it has a high unemployment rate and pan handlers standing in every median.

I once heard a guy who was pretending to be a normal person say “those lazy, no good breadbaskets are flash mobbing another store in Philadelphia!” Now I know the code word meanings! Rrrrraaaacis!!!!

If Florida was the "breadbasket" of the Confederacy, why were so many of their soldiers starving?
There are even scholars who think that the South finally gave up because of this. The lack of food broke their back so to speak. Hungry, disease ridden soldiers aren't exactly gung-ho. No matter what the cause they are fighting for.

Not true....the term dates to 1845, possibly earlier.
The term bread basket = “basket for holding bread” dates to the 1500’s. It’s far from clear to me that “bread basket” = agricultural area/food supplier dates to the Civil War.
To: nhwingut; All
"The Shenandoah Valley was known as the Bread Basket of the South during the Civil War" according to the
Virginia Angus Association. That valley is NOT in Florida, it's in Virginia. They aren't the only easily identified source of this info.
Hamby is factually WRONG.
