That’s good shootin’ for sure.

For me, I don’t hardly practice shooting my pistol much beyond 25 yards. When I think about a potential shoot, why would I be shooting my PISTOL, in a self-defense scenario, 50 yards?

But I DO admire your shooting ability.

No, don't get me wrong. These days I shoot 1911s and 4” .357s mostly. For self defense. I don't shoot them near that far, too short of sight radius.

Those guns we shot for hunting with. A couple bears and a few deer fell to them. Never got that close to an elk with my .44 though.

I also shoot an AR more than my ought six any more. But I really like the wheel guns and bolt rifles. Just that self loading stuff is more practical these days. And short pump shotguns.

.45’s great for defense, Blueflag. But why would some of us practice firing revolvers at targets beyond 25 yards? ‘Cause that might be all that we’re carrying when needed. It’s not always quite as practical to carry a rifle or shotgun. Some folks practice lobbing heavy (well over 250 gr.), hardened lead, long, flat-nosed bullets out of iron-sighted revolvers at targets up to 200 yards.

MileHi, I’m glad to live in a place that’s not surrounded by nearby forest now. No herds of sometimes gigantic, brown-haired, inquisitive beasts here (as on a much more forested and populated part of the Range years ago). Only a very few smaller, black ones that peacefully mind their own business. :-)

To be more clear, for most people in life-threatening self-defense situations, a good .45 semi-auto pistol is the best handgun that I know of. Shotgun, where feasible, of course. Most firearm defense situations for most people are close, dark and fast.

But a few of us live, work or play in circumstances strange to most (e.g., my place: kinda like Mars in several ways). Others just like to be different and make sure that something odd would work for defense.

Shoot, a six-foot chipper (steel bar with a point on one end and chisel on the other, for concrete work) would work for a man who practiced a few years to throw it accurately and hard enough—even for bear defense (see kung fu). [Hmmm...might work for herding a mean yak bull immune to a wooden staff, too.]
