MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Christopher Lacy, just days into his new job as a senior software engineer, was on his way to a Sunnyvale client on Sept. 4, the day he shot and killed a California Highway Patrol officer without warning, investigators and a company official said Wednesday.

The 36-year-old programmer had long worked remotely for various Silicon Valley companies, but was hired at Mountain View-based Mindsource Inc. a week and two days before the shooting, said Gabriel Meza, Mindsource's vice president of human resources. As a senior software engineer, Lacy was tasked with development of Java, a computer programming language.

"In the seven days he worked for us the only feedback was he was doing an amazing job," Meza said. "He was top level. Very senior."

The new job had Lacy visiting various Silicon Valley clients at their sites to provide consulting, Meza said, meaning Lacy would have to either commute 430 miles round-trip from his home to isolated and rural Rancho Tehama, outside of Corning, or stay somewhere in the Bay Area during the week. Neighbors said Lacy moved north a year ago because he despised the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area.

Good call, Gabe.

Was he an affirmative action hire and didn’t know squat from his public school education?

he wouldn’t have been developing Java... but developing WITH Java.

sounds like he did professional services for various clients of Mindsource (a bay area contracting company)

i did that type of work for years. lots of travel. lots of hotels and late nights. good pay, or at least it use to be.

story is a bit short on motive

During a time of obama Depression where many are just looking for any job, this guy does something like this?

I am thinking that Lacy shot the Officer because he knew something evil he was trying to cover up was about to be discovered.

Or William "D-Fens" Foster (Michael Douglas) in "Falling Down"?

I've been 900 miles from home for 3 1/2 years on my own nickel. No hotels. Too damn expensive. A single bedroom for $500/month + utilities. I ride my Harley to work to save commuting cost and maintain my sanity. The pay is good, but I get tired of living my life through Facebook posts and a nightly cell phone call to my wife.

I’ve travelled from silly valley to the middle east to scandenavia to eastern Europe... all thanks to bjclinton and the H1b / L-3 programs

I’ve had a place in FL for about 17 years. if you totaled up all the time I spent in my home area, it’d be about 5 of those years. (stopped about 2 years ago)
