New York City's health board has passed a rule banning super-sized, sugary drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries.
The regulation passed Thursday puts a 16-ounce size limit on cups and bottles of non-diet soda, sweetened teas and other calorie-packed beverages.
The ban will apply in fast-food joints, movie houses and Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias and most other places selling prepared food.
It doesn't cover supermarkets or most convenience stores.
City health officials say the ban is necessary to combat a deadly obesity epidemic.
The restaurant and beverage industries have assailed the plan as misguided. They say the city's health experts are exaggerating the role sugary beverages have played in making Americans fat.
Some New Yorkers have also ridiculed the rule as a gross government intrusion.

naa...its a stealth way to make New Yawkers think metric...nobody said you can’t sell a 475ml drink!!
When will the assault be on the “All you can eat” buffets?
IF NYC is truly concerned about obesity then they should ban GMO foods.
There’s no such thing as eating healthy anymore when the seeds are filled with chemicals. Fat is protecting the human body from those chemicals.
What they will do is spend money hiring soda police to make sure that businesses are fined if they violate the rules.
Why don’t they just ban morons? How about a fat tax?
Well obviously they are. They voted for the jackasses who inflicted this on them, so yeah, New Yorkers really are too stupid to run their own lives.
Movie theater owners are about to become very political. They make the majority of their profit (between 75 to 80%) from concessions. The majority of their profit from concessions are popcorn and soda.
Time for you to be rational. Get with the program.
A murdered fetus will never get obese. Abortion is another way of preventing obesity at the root. It's a two-fer also. Mom don'tget fat either.
So now people buy two 24-ouncers instead ...
Remember Prohibition? Remember how well that worked out?
Someone please challenge the constitutionality of this draconian bullflop ...!
Won’t they be selling more sodas now?
No doubt the mayor has some rich buddies who want to force the Japanese company to sell them the NYC 7/11 franchise.
Or just as likely they intend to run the Japanese out of NYC
Time after time I see the totalitarians squelch freedom more and more.
When will the revolution start to stop all of this nonsense?
It is mind-boggling that it didn’t start years ago.
7-11 is not included since it’s a convenience store. It’s 64-oz big gulp will still be available.
But when you go to McDonald’s you won’t be able to buy anything bigger than 16 oz at a time.
Exactly.
If I owned an establishment in that town I think this would be the perfect time to introduce my “Buy One 16 oz. Soda, Get Two Free” promotion.
Being an American means always being willing to say “F*** Off!” to your government.
No more ‘giant’ chocolate malted to share with my wife at Red Robin Resturants. The inmates are truly running the asylm, but that may be an insult to the insane in comparing them to this group of politicans.
The person thought I was nuts.
Well, here we are...
Criminal Bloomers and his dyke counterpart head of the city council has decided for your own good that FREEDOM is counter productive to good health.
**** you Mike and the dyke you rode in on
I hope it burns down when the stores stop taking EBTs and the freaks riot.
