WEDNESDAY, Sept. 12 (HealthDay News) -- New York City's controversial proposal to regulate restaurant sales of large sugary drinks is coming to a head, with the city's Board of Health scheduled to decide the measure's fate on Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg's self-appointed board is expected to pass the measure, effectively prohibiting city restaurants, delis, sports facilities, and street vendors (but not grocery stores or convenience stores) from selling sweetened beverages in servings exceeding 16 ounces.
The mayor has framed the issue as an urgent public health effort to combat obesity, saying the goal is to help New Yorkers make better nutritional choices.

Soda-ban opponents, however, insist the city is stripping residents of their First Amendment freedoms.
"We don't have high hopes of stopping this," said Eliot Hoff, spokesman for New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, a coalition of individuals and businesses opposed to the regulations. "But we nevertheless believe that the people of New York can make their own decisions about what they eat or drink."
In the battle against obesity, "more choice rather than less choice is the way to go," Hoff believes.

It is hard to compute this when our Ambassador in Libya has just been murdered by terrorists, which cannot be lost the Mayor. Also, we live in an economy where poverty grows day by day, putting people in danger of not having enough food of any kind, and he puts this out?!!!..It must be some kind of distraction because it is INSANE!
You can still get a free 32oz with your abortion, or membership to a gay bath house.
Can we go inspect Bloomberg’s pantry and fine him for every 2 liter bottle of soda we find. No. Didn’t think so. This is how people become serfs. By bowing to their overlords who make the rules but don’t follow them.
How about the millions of people who commute to the city for work every day, and therefore are not residents of New York City? Are they exempt from this stupid regulation?
I wish I could say I'm boycotting New York City over this, but I haven't spent a dime in that place since they imposed their smoking ban some years ago.
In AZ at the Circle K you can get a 44 oz soda for 79 cents while open or concealed carrying your firearm of choice without needing a concealed carry permit.
And my sister still asks when I am moving back to NY.
If we could just move most of California, Chicago (Illinois for the most part), Detroit, New York, and New Orleans together overseas to live with their Muslim brothers it would make everyone happy and restore peace and sanity back to America.
All businesses should offer deals where you buy something (say a trading card with the store’s picture) and you get a drink of any size for free.
Can’t stop freebies!
