A longtime professor and one-time dean of the University of Chicago Law School told The Daily Caller that Barack Obama was never offered tenure, despite the assertions of a New York Times reporter who covers the president and the first family.
Other faculty members dreamed of tenured positions; [Obama] turned them down, wrote Times White House Correspondent Jodi Kantor, author of The Obamas, in a July 30, 2008 profile of the presidents twelve years as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School.
And yet, according to longtime University of Chicago law professor Richard Epstein, Obama was never actually offered a tenured faculty position. Nor, for that matter, was he ever a constitutional law professor.
I have no idea where Jodi got her story about the tenure offer, said Epstein, adding that he immediately wrote Kantor to tell her she was wrong.
Tenure offers require votes from faculties approved by the provost, and need a scholarly output. He was approached with the possibility of an entry level position without tenure, but it never got to the faculty for want of interest on his side, Epstein confirmed via email.
Epstein was the law schools interim dean during 2001. His account contradicts a claim Kantor has repeatedly made, that a tenure offer came from Dean Daniel Fischel.
Mr. Obama turned the offer down, Kantor wrote in 2008. She expanded on that claim later that day, writing for a Times blog. When the law school tried to hire Mr. Obama after his failed 2000 congressional race, it was for a tenured job. Kantor wrote. In our interview, I asked [Fischel] if he meant tenure-track, and he said no.
Outstanding post. This is what i always try to explain
to people who dont get it. They usually end up replying that
even if he’s not that smart, NOBODY could have fixed what
BUSH left. LOL!!
Meanwhile, Prof Epstein is preparing for his IRS audit!
Jodi Kantor = Liar
There are a lot of adjuncts who do a fine job for colleges—sometimes they have an expertise that no one on the faculty has and offer an evening course in the subject, or teach a rare language for which there is insufficient interest (or funding) to have a full-time person teaching. Many adjuncts have full-time jobs doing something else.
My experience with law school instructors is that they are practicing specialists, who might occasionally teach a class in their specialty.
Many are women who have left their full time practice to raise a family, and teach to keep up the intellectual “chops.”
Some are those with unsatisfying or unsuccessful practices looking for a change (these folks sometime opt for politics instead, like David Wu).
Instructors and adjuncts often have an ENTIRELY different career than law professors. Law profs are typically those who got top grades in law school, demonstrated unusual academic talents in their approach to the law, and follow the academic path from the beginning.
I guess they didn’t want a professor reading from a teleprompter.
” It no longer matters that he lies, or why he no longer has his license to practice law. There is no sense of shame in Obama, and there is no concern about it in the electorate that supports him.”
Nope. Obama could commit murder, and 80% of his little followers would try to justify it.
” And to be a prof...one has to publish. Dont recall any scholarly publications.
One can be an Asst. Professor, without having published, but to be an Associate or Full Professor, “publish or perish” is the general rule.
” Stupid premise. Adjuncts are not tenure track.”
Correct. Obama the Clown wasn’t even an Asst. Professor.
Ivy league flunky comes to mind : )
Let’s see his college transcripts to be sure. :-)
” IMO, there is no shame in being an instructor. Maybe its lowly in the academic hierarchy, but its a respectable job. What makes it not respectable, is when its an Affirmative Action hire, and undeserved.”
It was most assuredly an affirmative action hire. Probably a political favor.
” I feel sorry for anyone in any of his classes. If his teaching style was anything like his current speaking style, it must have been atrocious. Did he have teleprompters in class? “
LOL. The few times I have heard Obama speak without a teleprompter, he was no better than a high school kid(a none-too-bright high school kid)
Never offered tenure? Heck, he was never offered an associate professor position. Think about that. He worked there for 12 years, yet never made it past ‘lecturer’.

No surprise that having good/clever speaking skills gets a person above the crowd, especially if the crowd is of same mental capacity. Reminds me of a fellow student ‘A’ in a high school incident who was heavy into drama. One morning the English teacher popped a surprise quiz about a literary reading assignment. Students were asked to write a one page critique about the assignment. After the one page writings were all collected the teacher asked ‘A’ why he had not turned in a paper. A’s response was that he wasn’t very good at writing but he could could give a talk much better. The teacher allowed ‘A’ to stand up and ramble for a few minutes which he did. Some people just like to talk (or other words) to impress others.
my 14 year old daughter was telling me the kids in school were all being boring, talking about ‘politics’
I asked what they were saying and she said they were all making fun of Obama.
Thats an encouraging sign
My Jr. High student told me the other kids HATE Obama. LOL!
Yeah, it is almost like the feeling a person might have when a member of one's family is a serial killer and it is more than obvious that the perp is guilty.
Obama taught one two-hour seminar each semester and had no scholarly publications, Epstein said, noting what he called a lack of interest on the future presidents part. He saw Obama as having one eye fixed on academia and the other on politics.
Oh yes, one 2 hour seminar a semester... truly a deep academic record.
