Professor Sparks Debate After Breast-Feeding Sick Baby in Class

WASHINGTON — One day late last month at American University, Adrienne Pine was in a jam.

The assistant anthropology professor was scheduled to begin her course “Sex, Gender & Culture.” But her baby daughter woke up with a fever, and the single mother worried that she had no good child-care options.

So Pine brought her sick baby to class.

The baby, in a blue onesie, crawled on the floor when she wasn't strapped onto Pine's back.

The mother extracted a paper clip from the girl's mouth at one point and shooed her away from an electrical outlet.

When the baby grew restless during the 75-minute afternoon session with 40 students, according to the professor's account, Pine breast-fed her while continuing to lecture and review the syllabus.

your response is ridiculous. The alleged benefit of breast feeding is the mother’s milk, not the container it is in. Get it? Expressing the breast milk into a bottle and giving the baby the bottle with the mother’s milk is done all the time by people who are not exhibitionists.
Furthermore, the spectacle of women doing that in public is out of the third world that the marxist woodstock nation has revived. In previous times, only peasants and the poverty-stricken urban poor breastfed in public.
And I would add to that, that even if the woman in this story had bottle fed her baby, she had no business bringing it to class. Would you like your doctor to be breastfeeding while she is operating on you? Your dentist while drilling your teeth? There is a division between adult outside society and the nursery - the marxists hippies want to make all society the nursery. Apparently you are one of them.

’ Expressing the breast milk into a bottle and giving the baby the bottle with the mother’s milk is done all the time by people who are not exhibitionists.’

Apparently you do not know the paedetricians research and recommendatiosn which says bottle feeding cannot replace breast feeding and bottle feeding does not help the development of the infants gums and teeth and it can cause problems to the teeth. For a crying child, a breast provides a comfort zone which cannot be replicated by a bottle. You seem clueless, so better read on the literature on the benefits of breast feeding and it is not just the milk.

If you again bothered to read what I said before , it is clearly mentioned that breast feeding in public is acceptable if there is NO OTHER CHOICE. Clearly one would prefer someone to do in the privacy of their homes and preferably covered up but again when someone has no choice they can do it in public if they wish.

The breast primary purpose in nature is to feed a hungry child, it is not a sexual object or something to be felt ashamed of as you seem to think it is.

As a conservative I recognise the importance of natural bonding.

You seem to be wrapped up in your elitist liberal thought process where common sense is lost and you make up your own facts. Try to be rational.

And in the 1920s, pediatricians said to feed babies on a strict schedule and not to pick them up when they cried. These medical fads swing with the pendulum - no one who knows history could take this seriously.
Furthermore, a baby’s teeth are not going to be impaired or gums ruined by being bottle fed a couple of times. In fact, millions upon millions of perfectly healthy people were bottle fed as infants.
I hope the next time you are, say, in court, your lawyer starts to breastfeed her baby in the middle of cross examining a witness. Or your busdriver does it, or your dentist in the middle of filling a cavity. Let’s have a child-centered self-gratifying world with no social boundaries. It’s better for our gums.

I liked boobies when I was a baby,
I still like boobies now.
When I was little I liked boobies
Better than the Borden cow.
One sad day my mommy said
I was too big for the boob...
I howled and cried, fit to be tied!
I thought she was very rude.
I thought I’d die without the booby,
But mom had a clever trick:
I forgot her taste when the Borden was laced
With 3 spoonfuls of Nestle’s Quik.
