White House Disavows Cairo Apology (Free Republic broke embassy apology story)
Politico ^ | Tuesday, September 11, 2012 | Byron Tau

The White House is disavowing a statement from their own Cairo embassy that apologized for anti-Muslim activity in the United States.

"The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government," a senior administration official told POLITICO.

The U.S. embassy in Cairo put out a statement early Tuesday that apologized for an anti-Muslim film being circulated by an Israeli-American real estate developer.

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions," the embassy said in a statement published online.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the film depicts the Muslim prophet Muhammed as a "womanizer, pedophile and fraud" — depiction bound to offend many Muslims.

The embassy came under widespread criticism for failing to defend free speech in the face of threats of violence. Egyptian protesters rioted anyway, breaching the embassy walls and tearing down the American flag.

"Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Tuesday statement.

I don’t see much disavowing in Hellary’s statement. They once again condemned and said they deplored someone exercising their free speech rights to criticize a religion. She talks about their “commitment to religious tolerance.” What about reaffirming our commitment to tolerating all forms of free speech, including those we disagree with?

Can a Broadway musical on religion be far behind? Oh, wait there already is one.

I’ve always thought Obama was in the Muslim Brotherhood - this confirms it.

Didn’t they blame the Coptic Christians?

I think it’s because Christians are their political opponents in the U.S. If Christians were still voting mostly Democrat, as they might have before the school prayer ban and Roe vs. Wade, Democrats would stick up for them more. But domestically, they’re the enemy. Every other religion is a potential Democrat constituent, so they must get their butts kissed. It’s the same reason every race and gender can be discriminated against except for white males, according to liberals.

It's how I found out about 9/11.

Me too. I saw the news on FR and turned on the TV just a few moments before the 2nd plane crashed into the tower.

You are so right Kratos regarding the time we all spend on FR. I think that any real loss in productivity reading FR is minor to keeping a clear head about what is really happening around us.

I think that FR presents the only objective presentation of current events around and it is consistent in its presentation. The added lucid freeper observations that accompany the articles are the best that you will ever see,-a real plus. Lets admit it,- we are addicts to FR.

I know Ambassador Patterson and she is far from being gutless or a moron. She has been the target of bomb attacks and served in some very dangerous places. I doubt she wrote or approved the press release. More than likely, it was done in Washington.

I’d have to know that such marriages were uncommon in his time. Children were exploited for ages and well past Mohammed’s time. Not condoning it but was his behavior unusual?

A BTT and thanks for defending her. I met her once very briefly and I didn’t see her as a political flack at all. I’m hoping she didn’t write that garbage and if you say she didn’t I believe you.

No question a comparison between Jesus and Muhammad is not even close. Jesus led such an exemplary life and had such a profoundly beautiful prophecy. That’s why it’s so sad to see Islam treated with kid gloves and Christianity denigrated.

Muhammad’s life was full of vicious wars, power grabs, sexual escapades. The whole example is in stark contrast to Jesus.

I served with her for a few years in Riyadh. She is tough, smart, and capable. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of how the press release came about, but given the high profile of the post and the political season, I seriously doubt that the Embassy would issue a press release without clearance/editing from Washington. I say that advisedly have served 28 years as an FSO.

The tone and language of the PR don't even sound like something a career diplomat would author, especially from someone like Anne who has had 5 ambassadorships including in places like Columbia and Pakistan and as acting UN ambassador. In many cases, ambassadors are the messengers who just carry the Administration's water. When things go bad, they are used as scapegoats like Hume Horan in Saudi Arabia.

I apologize then, I don’t know how she could have let this happen on her watch then.

Must be incompetence then or our administration actually did bless this and now are disavowing it.

Another woman under the bus.
