Don’t be too quick to write off Akin. While you say he might be “poison”, his opponent is so wacko leftist that many Missourians will hold their noses and vote for Akin, in addition to those who figure that he shouldn’t be forced out for misspeaking just once.
The trouble is that no major non-partisan poll with credibility has happened since just after the gaffe. Two or more minor polls have shown Akin mostly recovered, but it won’t be official until a pollster like Rasmussen polls again.
So at this point, Akin’s biggest opponent is not the Democrat, but those members of his own party that are trying to destroy him.
And they may be doing so not because of his gaffe, but because they hope to put a RINO in his seat. So the question becomes: “what to do if he *recovers* in the polls, but the Republican leadership still wants to destroy him?”
At that point, *he* is not the problem.
There is merit to that argument but the for the fact the subject of the misspeaking was rape...if it was about taxes, economy, etc. he would have been laughed at and ridiculed by the left and media but not written off. Rape is a considerable more dangerous topic to misspeak on.
