This F-15 Aerial Dogfighting Video Was Shot Entirely By Pilots
Business Insider ^

Posted on 09/10/2012 1:02:41 PM PDT by dead

We don't post a whole lot of videos in their entirety as they're rarely as good as a series of stills lined up with titles and descriptions, but this one is an exception.

Filmed over 12 months by fighter crews themselves with a Sony Handycam, the piece highlights what it's like to fly in the cockpit of one of the best air-to-air fighter planes ever built, during all kinds of maneuvers...

“I’d rather listen to what the pilots are saying than that crappy overly loud soundtrack.

Does every military aviation video still think they have to play some rock track like “Top Gun”?”

Young, stupid directors who think that they are being “creative” and “cool”.

The problem is that they can’t differentiate between “stupid” and “cool”.

Being one of the ‘geezers’ that flew the 1st generation of jets, 94’s,89’s, T-33’s I am really impressed by these 4th and 5th gen machines. Did get an hour or two in the F-16 sim once. It was a blast after I got used to the controls. My fat gut won’t take the turns anymore except in FX-10.

Young, stupid directors who think that they are being “creative” and “cool”.

Too true. I often get calls from directors, bad ones, looking for original songs to plug into some lame movie scene in an attempt to sex it up and 9 times out of 10 what they want is entirely at odds with the action on screen - "Do you have anything that's, you know, Stray Cat Strut for this WWII funeral scene?" There's no talking sense into them.

And since the damage is already done on this one, I suggest turning down the volume on the video and putting Walton's "Spitfire Prelude and Fugue" on your stereo as a more proper accompaniment - or start this vid at the same time

My Brother worked on the F-4 in the USAF.

Pigs in space he called them.

Pigs in space referred to high altitude performance. The F-4 did much better at low altitude. With smart tactics, you could hold your own against the F-15 - but you WERE at a big handicap.

WSO/EWO with 700 hrs in the F-4E/G.

Depends on where the sky is located.

Both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels flew the Phantom. The Blues moved onto the A-4 and the Birds the T-38.

I believe the T-38, which is very similar to the F-5 (pretty hard to tell the difference between the Talon and the F-5B), was chosen because it was in widespread active USAF service (the F-5 flew with aggressor squadons but was otherwise an export product) and was somewhat lighter despite being a two seater, thus having a better logistics tail and thrust to weight ratio.

I am a retired USAF air traffic controller and worked hundreds and hundreds of F-4’s. Calling them pigs in space doesn’t do them justice. It took me quite a while to learning their turning characteristics so that I could work them on a PAR approach. One pilot I knew said the F-4 was proof that you could make a brick fly if it went fast enough.
