The media are gushing and fawning over new poll numbers showing Barack Obama getting a bounce from the just ended Democratic National Convention putting him four points ahead of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Before they get too cocky, they might want to recall that after his convention ended in 1988, Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis led George H.W. Bush by seventeen points.
The New York Times reported July 26, 1988:

"How am I losing to this guy?"
I am praying that Obama goes for a ride in a tank!
Bush came back in that election because his advisor Lee Atwater had stones the size of watermelons. He knew if they could expose Dukakis’ far leftism, they would win easily. As Atwater said, “We are going to strip the bark of the little bastard.” It worked.
Problem this time is people know 0bama and his leftism. The demographics and political ideology in this country have shifted to the left a great deal. Being a liberal is not poison anymore.
I loved that guy. They really don't make them like that anymore.
Dukakis jokes...
Q: What does “Dukakis” mean in Greek?
A: Mondale
If Dukakis gets elected, then his home state will be renamed to Machusetts. The “ass” will be in Washington.
I wonder how history would’ve turned out if Dukakis had won in 1988 instead. He probably would’ve been a disaster and we might have gotten a better GOP candidate than Bush in 1992 who might’ve won and later gotten re-elected. We also may never have had Clinton or Obama.
Heck, that’s nothing. Tomorrow’s Gallup Poll has Barky leading Romney by 92 points.
I don’t think bush came back. I don’t think Dukakis ever had a lead.
Much like we are seeing today. I don’t think Obama has a lead either. I thinks polls are skewed and manipulated by dems.
Valid points. However, Dukakis still looked like a dork and the image stuck. Obama has had numerous images like that and nothing seems to penetrate the teflon shell the media gave him in 2008.
Well, one pollster, Gallup, tried to report a real result a few weeks ago - with Romney 10 points ahead.
They got a couple calls - now they’re back in line with the rest of the pollsters.

After voting Mc/Palin, I was exit polled by the AP. As soon as I started answering questions ‘conservatively’ the pollster stopped marking down the answers.
I poop you negative.
I think there’s some of that at work in the current polling. Pollsters simply inputting their own preferred data or moving on to the next ‘correct’ point of view.
Wasn’t the RNC convention ‘after’ the DNC one back in 1988? And, Bush bounced back quite well after his convention? If so, then this isn’t necessarily a good analogy to point to.
Exactly. The GNC was held after the DNC. Bush bounced over the little Greek dude after his convention and never looked back.
Hope Romney does not follow the example of McCain and his nice/soft campaign.
Attack, attack and attack... that is ithe only thing that works in politics.
If Romney is having the same McLoser advisors around him, he needs to wisen up and fire those idiots, a private sector guy like Romney should recognise such Mclame losers straight away.
Yeah, but Dukakis is down by 4 now.
He came back because of Ronald Reagan. He realized he needed to pretend he agreed with Reagan in time to save himself.
no, he’ll lead by 234230482398402934832098402398432 points!!! Let’s curl up and die! /s
