The presidential race in New Mexico may be more competitive than national pundits and polls have suggested.
According to a Journal Poll, President Barack Obama appears to have a small lead over Republican Mitt Romney in New Mexico, but Obama has not topped 50 percent, and 8 percent of voters were undecided in a close race with nine weeks remaining.
Obama drew support from 45 percent of the New Mexico voters surveyed between Sept. 3 and Sept. 6, while Romney stayed within striking distance at 40 percent.
Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, who also will be on the Nov. 6 ballot, had 7 percent support. Johnson subtracted almost equal numbers of votes from Obama and Romney, according to the poll, meaning his third-party candidacy was not more damaging to one than the other.

Johnson is the only strict-constructionist on the ballot...but we must all pretend that Romney is a conservative so that the winner has an R after his name.
Garry Johnson is not even getting Wayne Allen Root’s vote.

Johnson has not chance to win the state or the presidency - who do you prefer, Obama or Romney?
Johnson has not chance to win the state or the presidency - who do you prefer, Obama or Romney?
Were Johnson not in the race, I’m sure his vote would split 50/50 between Romney and Obama. Or they just wouldn’t vote for President at all. So Johnson isn’t really a spoiler here.
gd double post
Neither one will reverse our inevitable collapse into third world status. We lost that war decades ago.
Hard to say. A close election could come down to a few votes.
We have a 2 party system. You may not like that we have a 2 party system, but it is what it is. The one and only time in US history a major political party completely collapsed, a new party replaced it as the 2nd leg of our 2 party system. Johnson has zero chance to win. The next president will be Obama or Romney. Which one do you prefer? Any vote you cast that is not Romney/Ryan helps maintain the status quo with Obama/Biden in office. If you are a supporter of Libertarians, perhaps you are on the wrong forum?
How is that statement quixotic?
I don’t disagree with any of what you’ve said. I guess you assume from my statement that I will vote for Johnson even though that was never stated. Don’t you hate it when people put words into your mouth?
Unfortunately I can’t disagree. I’d like to slow it down as much as posible for my kid’s sake.
It seemed to me your post was advocating for a vote for Johnson. If I misinterpreted that, I certainly do apologize.
There are a lot of potheads in NM, I’m not sure they would be voting for Romney even if Johnson weren’t on the ticket.
I think the odds that Johnson is drawing equally from both candidates is actually pretty high.
The largest chunk of the remainder of votes would of course be garnered by Mr. Romney .... with the rest split amongst the candidates that drew votes from those voting on principle and single issues.
Sadly ..... Without a planned strategy by the GOP and Conservatives and Libertarians to work as a team and rally behind the one single candidate that can defeat the incumbent ..... it will more than likely end up with the unsavory prospect of a second term for the one that seeks to undo the greatness of this country.
This, of course, does not have to be the fateful outcome of this election ..... well, that is,...... if we could actually do something that is extremely difficult for the Libertarians, GOP and Conservatives to do ....... that thing being .... working together as a team to achieve the single objective of defeating the President.
This state is very winnable.
First, the undecideds will break for Romney.
Second, about half of Johnson’s vote will also break for Romney.
The prospect of a neo-Marxist being re-elected President will sober up a lot of people who would prefer Johnson over Romney, but recognize Johnson doesn’t a chance of winning.
Third, potentially ALL the votes doing to Romney AND Johnson will go to the GOP candidate in the Senate race. Johnson, by helping get libertarians to the poll may cost us a few votes in the Presidential race, but will definitely help us in the downticket races.
Republicans should have a fighting chance with the stoner vote. Two days ago, in Colorado, Paul Ryan put down a marker on the issue of the federal government deferring to the states in the matter of medical marijuana. In New Hampshire, the Republican-controlled state legislature passed a medical marijuana bill only to see it vetoed by the Democratic governor. In this year’s election, the Republican candidate for Governor says he will sign such a bill if elected.
