I’ve played by “the rules” and “the system” all my life, and I should be at a point where I can retire in 12 years or so.

That kind of $$$ is always worth the risk. If I was younger, and knew what I know now about things, damn straight I’d be taking risks too. Maybe even THOSE kinds of risks.
