VLADIVOSTOK, Russia - Canada has placed Iran on its list of state sponsors of terrorism and has shut down its embassy in Tehran, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said.
Baird, speaking to reporters ahead of the opening of the annual summit of Pacific nation leaders here, said the skeleton Canadian Embassy staff in Tehran has been withdrawn for their own safety.
Canada is also expelling all Iranian diplomats in Canada. "Canada views the government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today," Baird said. "The government of Canada is formally listing Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism."
Baird said the federal government is also officially warning Canadians not to travel to Iran.
"We feel that it's no longer safe to have representatives of the government of Canada in Tehran," Baird said.
There has been increased speculation in the Israeli press that Israel is preparing to attack Iran to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. But, in a statement e-mailed to reporters, Baird seemed to rule out the idea that Canada has some inside intelligence about any pending military action against Iran.
"Unequivocally, we have no information about a military strike on Iran," Baird said in a statement e-mailed to reporters after a brief scrum here.
"This action is a made-in-Ottawa action and we're acting alone in this regard," Baird told reporters.

Before 0bama, we laughed at Canada. Since 0bama, we’re less gutsy than the people we laughed at. SHAMEFUL!
Good for Harper.
Canada has been getting more and more attractive these last few years with sound policies and smart energy. If only our own great leader had some wisdom.
Gutsy call.I wonder why they’re doing that *now*???
And I wonder,,,,, If Israel attacks Iran, will Canada stand by them, and aid them, while Obama sits on his thumb and rotates?
Canada Ping!
Canada didn’t accuse Steyn of anything.
The federal Canadian Human Rights Commission dismissed the Canadian Islamic Congress’ complaint against Maclean’s in June 2008. The Commission ruled that overall, “the views expressed in the Steyn article, when considered as a whole and in context, are not of an extreme nature, as defined by the Supreme Court’
But now that Canada has put its cards on the table, what will they do?
Will they, just like we, continue to welcome Islam with open arms?
Hopper!
So ...how do I get on the “Canada ping” list?
Just ask me- you’re on it now :-)
The hell they didn’t.
Read the prologue to his 2006 book: charges were pending at that time and he was facing prosecution for “hate speech.”
So they were dismissed.
It’s an odd set of laws where a writer can be fined and even imprisoned for expressing a political opinion, if that opinion offends an easily offended ideology like Islam.
Canada is too much like England.
That’s beautiful!
PS
Here you go, snowy: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/editorials/item_6dD0aACtm0IHKpZ76wqqaM;jsessionid=004303DCD4B9399FC967EED02CA1E0B4
“The plaintiffs allege that Maclean’s advocated, among other things, the notion that Islamic culture is incompatible with Canada’s liberalized, Western civilization. They insist such a notion is untrue and, in effect, want opinions like that banned from publication.”
Heh.
The most extraordinary thing, I think, about your “political writings and expressions” star chamber is that it prosecutes “homophobic” speech as diligently as it ferrets out “Islamaphobic” writings, images, public comments, etc.
And the two things are incompatible.
Steyn makes this point: How do you think the Democrat base—women, gays, etc.—would like living under sharia law?
As he puts it, we conservatives, well, we grow beards, take on a couple more wives, hide the beer & scotch—no big thing.
So Canada’s speech star chamber summons Steyn in order to weigh and determine whether banning any and all speech critical of Islam is “incompatible with Canada’s liberalized, Western civilization.”
And then they dismissed it. Good on them. The complaint should have been promptly placed in the round file.
But no one expects the Canadian inquisition ....
Canadian Islamic Congress complaint . Can you read ? It does not say the Canada complaint .
Do you understand the meaning of “ the views expressed in the Steyn article, when considered as a whole and in context, are not of an extreme nature “ . Obviously not.

Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, the enabling legislation that permits federal human-rights complaints regarding the communication of hate messages by telephone or on the Internet, is doomed. On Wednesday, the federal Conservatives voted to repeal it on a largely party-line vote by a margin of 153 to 136 through a private members bill introduced by Alberta Conservative MP Brian Storseth. Following royal assent, and a one-year phase-in period, Section 13 will be history.
