The State of the Akin-McCaskill Race (Akin out of money?)
National Review Online ^ | 09/07/12 | Ramesh Ponnuru

Posted on 09/07/2012 1:53:59 PM PDT by TonyInOhio

He’s in a money crunch:

Todd Akin’s TV ads are, reportedly, being yanked from stations across the state because his campaign isn’t paying the bills. KOMU-TV in Columbia says it received half of the payment for an ad buy, and when it didn’t get the other half, it cancelled the rest of the ads. The station says its confirmed that other stations from St. Louis to Kansas City have been put in the same position.

McCaskill, meanwhile, is running positive ads about how moderate she is. I imagine the tone of the race will change markedly if Akin stays in past the deadline for him to get out.

the RNC should not give McCaskill a free ride and they should start funding him to run negative ads vs McCaskill so long as he agrees not to tie himself to the national ticket in the ads. They do not need the lead weight.IMHO

Whatever damage was done by the comments has been done. Just like Rush's "slut" comments which were still being referred to at the DNC. No matter what happens with his race, him dropping out, the funding, etc., the Dems will continue to use both his and Rush's comments to associate with Republicans wherever they think they can get an advantage. Since this requires them to falsely twist his words, he is a little-known person nationally, and the comment has no connection at all to any sort of Republican platform or policy, there is little traction the Dems can get out of it, so no matter what it won't be heard about much more.

Akin is the ultimate RINO.

Romney and Ryan are bigger RINOs than Akin on every level. Akin is a staunch fiscal and social conservative who was voting for Tea Party ideals before the Tea Party existed, including voting against government expansions like No Child Left Behind and against risking cutting the military budget through sequestration.

Priebus has already said that no way no how is Aiken getting a dollar of the party's money.

This wouldn't be the first time that Priebus had to backtrack on his words and it won't be the last. He'll just have to suck it up and write the check or assume the responsibility for a lost Senate seat for the want of a simple check that was under his control.

Akin is a fighter and he will not fold under pressure. He has proven that he has a spine of steel. Like Washington at Valley Forge, Akin will find a way to overcome these short term hardships and win a victory that the moderates will not be permitted to soon forget. His campaign will serve as a shining example of what adherence to principle can achieve.

Get your facts straight before you start misrepresenting a conservative republican.

It doesn't matter politically what the exact words are. The way the public will understand them is that Akin believes a woman will not get pregnant if she is violently raped. He may be correctly citing someone else, but that doesn't matter. He chose to cite that source as credible in the context of the question. It was a stupid thing to say when being baited by reporter.

Even so, my point is that he was stupid for having commented on the subject in the first place. His comments have simply made it more difficult for Jim to win his seat. He has made it more difficult for conservatives to win their seats.

He didn’t abide by the adage about not giving the supporters of your opponent a reason to come out and vote for him.

I am personally sick and tired of conservative politicians who seem to be purposefully aware that there are things you don’t say, because they honestly cost elections.

Amazed that there’s anyone left on FR to defend this moron. Easy Senate pickup down the drain. It is surreal. We have a better chance of winning CT and MA than MO. Shoot me now

...boy I’d volunteer to get rid of an FR moron who can’t support a 96% conservative Congressman who is the strongest ProLifer in his state, but trolls like you think its sureal...what’s sureal is that you swallow the JournaListMedia set-up and drink every drop of the koolaid. If it wasn’t for anti-conservative Pudge Rove, we’d have gotten rid of Dirty Harry, had a race in DE and taken down McCasket... but the GOPe hates conservatives more than Dems!

ymmv

He should have had the decency to withdraw from the race so somebody better could replace him.

I think he knew fully who would do the "replacing": not the rank and file, but the GOP-e. Given the likelihood that they would install a pro-abortion RINO it is understandable that he stayed in as in his mind he had no moral alternative and had every reason not to award Party perfidy toward a conservative nominee. If at this point he wins, that would be a good thing. We have no alternative but to support him, despite that he's an idiot.

You can thank Akin personally for possibly costing the Republicans a seat in Missouri and getting McCaskell elected.

She really appreciates your support of Akin.

I thought the last day was “eight weeks prior to the election” (9/11). (or the Friday before the above). I’m happy to see that he has more time to see if he can overcome this.

As near as I can tell from nearby Tennessee, his withdrawal was an automatic loss. Too large a number were angry over the GOP abandoning him. That might be different now, but like it or not, he is most likely the best shot at ousting McCaskill.

Oh really. How Democratic Party of you. It matters to those interested in the facts.

The way the public will understand them is that Akin believes a woman will not get pregnant if she is violently raped.

They may understand that from other people's words who are lying about what he said and from your words that show you don't care about what he said, but they won't understand that from his words.

That's a lie --

I take it you KNOW for a fact that he knows otherwise. If you don't, he would be simply mistaken and you would be the liar, because for certain you know that you do not know his mind and leveled the charge anyway.

Logs, eyes, and splinter groups... Matthew 7 and all. That "Chip" is on your shoulder.

Never forget that Claire McCaskill caste the 60th vote to pass Obamacare. She thought we were stupid enough to let that slide by but the day of reckoning has come. Missouri will vote for Akin in order to rid us of the parasite.

You can thank Akin personally for possibly costing the Republicans a seat in Missouri and getting McCaskell elected.

And you can thank Reince Priebus and Karl Rove.

No acceptance of personal responsibility in the Aiken camp? Try and spread blame all you want, Aiken said what he said. It wasn't a gotcha question. It was an imbecilic response to an easy question and the consequences are his fault. Not Priebus' fault, though I don't agree with his knee-jerk tossing of Aiken under the bus. Not the media's fault, who live for crucifying conservatives for no reason much less a real one. It's Aiken's fault. And the loss of the seat, if that happens, is his fault too.

Have you ever looked at Akin’s record in the House? Where is your proof of Dim donations? You are not the first to say this, but you can be the first to have any proof. McCaskill ran ads about all three. Some interpret her claim that he was “Too conservative for Missouri” as supporting him.
