Ridding the U.S. of oil-based energy and avoiding the catastrophic consequences of climate change are the primary goals of the Democratic Party platform released this week that labeled the planets temperature variations as a national security crisis.
We must end the tyranny of oil in our time, the platform said. This immediate danger is eclipsed only by the longer-term threat from climate change, which will lead to devastating weather patterns, terrible storms, drought, conflict, and famine. That means people competing for food and water in the next fifty years in the very places that have known horrific violence in the last fifty: Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. That could also mean destructive storms on our shores, and the disappearance of our coastline, the platform said.
The U.S. is no longer public enemy number one when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions that distinction now goes to China. Other offending countries include the U.S., India, Russia and the European Union, the platform said.
Democrats want to conquer climate change through the creation of a global energy forum, which they would reach out to the offending nations to join in order to establish new climate protocols. We need a global response to climate change that includes binding and enforceable commitments to reducing emissions, especially for those that pollute the most.
Without dramatic changes, rising sea levels will flood coastal regions around the world. Warmer temperatures and declining rainfall will reduce crop yields, increasing conflict, famine, disease, and poverty. By 2050, famine could displace more than 250 million people worldwide. That means increased instability in some of the most volatile parts of the world, the platform said.
Never again will we sit on the sidelines, or stand in the way of collective action to tackle this global challenge, the platform said.
Breaking the countrys addiction to foreign oil calls for a Manhattan or Apollo Project-level commitment.
We hear that call and we Democrats commit to fast-track investment of billions of dollars over the next ten years to establish a green energy sector that will create up to five million jobs, the platform said.
It will not be easy, but neither was getting to the moon, the platform said.

Well, we did get a lot of great spinoffs from NASA...from Green Energy, I have a very nice solar-powered set of outdoor evening lamps...from China.
Thanks Ernest and neverdem.
Their craftiness is exceeded by, for the most part. their shear ignorance on most all issues.
Don't forget the GUNS!
