A grandson of Red Bull's late co-creator Chaleo Yoovidhaya has been arrested on suspicion of running over a policeman with a Ferrari in Bangkok.

The Thai police officer died after he and his motorbike were dragged some distance down a road.

Police said they had followed a petrol trail to the family estate where they detained Vorayuth Yoovidhaya, 27.

Bangkok's police chief took over the inquiry as a lower-ranked officer was alleged to have covered up the matter.

The police superintendent involved was transferred to another post after a bogus suspect was detained.

I understand your feeling about this... However, if an American is married to a Thai National ... the gun could be registered to the wife and kept in the household.

Carrying the gun in a car or out in public are other issues entirely. I believe I will be safe in Thailand in these days and times... Once long ago (in what seems another lifetime) I hitchhiked across Thailand carrying my M-16, 9mm pistol and 4 hand grenades...

I haven’t seen any of those signs here for many years. I doubt the police would allow them these days.

That stuff comes from Austria, made under license from the Thai product owner. The Thai product is syrupy concentrate in a 100ml. or 150ml. square bottle. It used to be sold in the US but when the Austrian stuff got popular about fifteen years ago they changed the artwork a little and sold it under Kratieng Dang, which is “Red Bull” in Thai.

You can get the original stuff or its Kratieng Dang equivalent in Chinese grocery stores for about a dollar a bottle.

In Thailand Red Bull sponsors the Saturday Morning kick-boxing show, or at least used to.

As for the grandson and the cop, now it’s a “battle of the Pu Yais, jockeying for influence. Who can get the bigger big brother in his corner. Not unlike Mafia wars, but more low key, and NO fingerprints.

ICCtheWay is basically correct.

Carrying outside of your residence, should the wife have a permit, is completely forbidden although she could probably get away with taking it to a range. (There is no specific law I know of about that but in general, Thai cops are pretty reasonable).

That is not to say a lot of rich Thais do not carry. They do, usually in a small handbag. You can sometimes spot them in the banks. Completely illegal, but TiT (this is Thailand).

A lot depends on the county (Amphur) where you live. Upcountry, if you get friendly with the local top cop or village headman, things are pretty relaxed. Different story though in Bankgok, Pattaya, Changmai, etc.

Some areas, particularly where there are a lot of military, have many ranges where you can rent a handgun and shoot. This is other than the tourist type ranges which you can find in Pattaya and I suppose other cities.

I have a German friend that was told by the range manager at one it would be possible to for him to buy/register a gun as a sport shooter. Never heard that before, but I got the feeling it is possible. Again depends a lot what Province and Amphur you are in.

I’ve lived here for many years, and IMO carrying for protection outside is not necessary. There are no car-jackings and that kind of thing here.

If you buy a house and feel you need protection for it, 3-4 dogs are a much better choice. Shooting intruders is a very big deal, especially for a foreigner. Few thieves - even gangs - will take on a bunch of large dogs.

Last thing - there was a reference to Thaivisa.com on this thread. That forum has both the best and worst advice and info you can find on Thailand. Visa info from posters like Lopburi is invaluable - completely trustworthy, but there are a lot of a-holes with nothing better to do all day than post mindless responses to every subject under the sun, none of which they know anything about.

Why didn’t you just find a roadside motel and rent a room for the night where you could have gotten some sleep before continuing your journey?

Most Thai do not like Arabs because they are filthy hypocrites .They do what is haram in their own rathole countries , when in M. Thai . The Arab men require anal sex from the Thai ladies they employ and the Thai men know all about this and see it as an abuse . Arab men also , while often paying well for the companionship , treat the Thai girls as chattle ; not well . Usually a certain class of more plump , pale skinned Thai ladies are favored by the Arabs . They try to imagine that they are getting white women .

Red Bull / Kratingdaeng rocks ! As a commercial driver I depend on it daily . It’s too bad we can’t get the original formula from Thailand , the syrupy vitamin blast , in the States . The closest I have found is M-Roy-Ha-sip (M150)
yet even this has caffeine way toned down from what you can get in M.Thai .

typical Sino - Thai rich kid ; way too much money that he did not earn and does not deserve . Using Bangers as his own little playground and seeing himself as a prince . In other words a worthless over-monied POS . BGK has many such punks .
