Channel 4 has become embroiled in controversy after viewers claimed that a programme distorted the history of Islam.
The broadcaster and regulator Ofcom and received nearly 550 complaints after Islam: The Untold Story was screened last week.
The shows presenter, Tom Holland, was subjected to a wave of criticism for his investigation into the origins of the religion and its early texts.
He said there was little written contemporary evidence about the life of the Prophet Muhammad, and claimed that the Koran makes little or no reference to Islams holy city of Mecca.
Holland, an award-winning writer and historian, received abusive tweets questioning his views on the religion.

I hope this guy is current on his life insurance payments.
“received nearly 550 complaints”
Amateur.
It WAS made up in the 600’s. MoHo took some from Judaism and some from Christianity and came up with islam. Even muslims recognized part of his writings as crazy and deemed those “The Satanic Verses”. Hitlers rise to power was also the perfect storm.
Sounds very accurate.
If 15,000 complained about a hit on Christians, it wouldn’t be noticed.
Robert Spencer has explored this theme in great detail in his book “Did Muhammed Exist?” (His answer: probably not).
That’s nuffin.
Somehow FR remains well enough guarded. Mad Mo and his following have gotten flouted from pole to pole here. Yet Fresno hasn’t been suicide bombed. Yet.
Christian missionaries to Muslims generally don’t dispute that Mo existed. They view him as a genuine, if crazy person. It seems to make more sense than trying to explain the Koran as some sort of composite book.
I guess Briton can expect a series of unexpected Bombings in the near future.
If they put this on PBS I may actually watch the hated network again.
The Koran was written by a rabbi or Jewish scribe.
TV historian triggers storm after calling Islam a ‘made-up’ religion (UK)

Thats tactical. But while the Enlightenment crowd disputed the existence of Jesus, there is far more direct and circumstantial evidence of that outside the New Testament than the existence of Mohammed. Apart from that, the history of the rise of Islam may be wrong. The Arabs may have been allies of the Persians who took over the Persian Empire after their combined forces overran the Byzantine Empire. In other words, it was the last phase of the war between the Persians and the Byzantines which left the great cities of that Greek Empire in ruins.
The Koran does look like the work of a mad man, who pops into and out of his rages without warning. A little more or less level headed if questionably coherent philosophizing, then bam, it’s kill ‘em all. Over and over. If it’s not Mo, then how it got to be known as Mo needs explanation.
The only contemporaneous bit of information about Mohammad that I am aware of is that his horse was named Barack
Holland is saying it was made up in the 700’s.
He’s right.

A spoof from the Dark Ages? If so, it backfired. It would be like writings from the Onion getting enshrined as history by the Smithsonian Institution. The Christian missionary to the Muslims that I knew, believes that some Jews fed gobbledygook to Mad Mo as a prank, but did not themselves write his book (he couldn’t have written it anyhow being illiterate — others took it as dictation from him).
