Something sure did happen - the Dems took control of both houses of Congress.
What happened was, in a nutshell, Bush went wobbly on amnesty, the GOP went on a spending spree and the socialists took control of congress. Fast forward to '08 when The Empty Chair took over with solid majorities in congress and ...you know the rest of the tragedy.
