Maryland Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley said Sunday that Americans are not better off under President Obama than they were four years ago, a somewhat startling admission that Republicans and Mitt Romney immediately pounced on.
On CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday morning, host Bob Schieffer asked O'Malley if he can "honestly say that people are better off today than they were four years ago."
"No," O'Malley said, "but that's not the question of this election."
"The question," he continued, "without a doubt, we are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recession, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars, charged for the first time to credit cards, the national credit card..." "George Bush is not on the ballots," Schieffer quipped.
The first sentence was good enough for the Romney campaign. It's a somewhat baffling admission because the Obama campaign has explicitly avoided giving a "Yes" or "No" answer to the question during the campaign in hopes of avoiding a bad soundbite.
That was the case on both ABC's "This Week" and "Fox News Sunday," where advisers David Plouffe and David Axelrod both avoided a direct answer.

What happened was, in a nutshell, Bush went wobbly on amnesty, the GOP went on a spending spree and the socialists took control of congress. Fast forward to '08 when The Empty Chair took over with solid majorities in congress and ...you know the rest of the tragedy.
You really can’t expect much better from MD. Ehrlich was a fluke because the Dem, Kathleen Kennedy Townesend, ticked off the blacks by not picking one of them as her running mate. O’Malley wants to run for POTUS.
“What’s in your wallet?”
O’Malley is Marylands Joe Biden.
By me more than most. Most of all I hate the way he gets away with it with so little opposition and gets on TV and smiles.
I hold RINO Erhlich in utter contempt for that make believe campaign he ran against him in 2010. He did nothing but help O Malley. With all Romney's faults at least he is trying to win. Not Erhlich. Was he working for O Malley?
If Obama wins then it could be tough going for a Dem, but if Romney wins it could be a easy target in 2016.
"Decent??" We are talking POTUS.
Maybe for O'Malley it's not the question, but for the rest of us it IS the question...
Boy, you’re not kidding.
I didn’t recognize Ehrlich as a Republican that year.
The “Bush job losses”??? The ones that really started bleeding when the DEMOCRATS took over CONgress????
Maryland really ought to be two states, Redneckland and DClandia.
Actually, most states have that urban/inner-city burden. It’s just bad when that population is larger than the rest of the state and, as in MD’s case, is joined by the likes of Montgomery County.
Get beyond Baltimore and Montgomery/PG counties, MD ain’t all bad. Same is true of NY/NYC, or CA without LA/SF.
I was so frustrated that I called his campaign a few times to complain. He refused to run ads about illegal aliens or Gay marriage that O Malley was a champion of.
Ehrlich's whole campaign was “He will raise you taxes but I won't”. What a $#%@ moron. It couldn't have better for O Malley if he wrote it himself. Ehrlich made that promise his first campaign and then broke it and then denied it. And that was his sole strategy.
I don’t buy it. O’Malley would much rather run in an open-seat situation in 2016 than against a President Romney. I think he answered the way he did not because he wants Obama to lose, but because he wants to keep getting invited to Sunday morning shows, and thr best way to do that is to say “interesting” stuff.
Umm lets see...democrats took over Congress?
Because Americans will be in love with Romney after four years and will be so happy they want to vote Republican? Dream on. Just like Americans are so happy Boehner took over the House and give congress a 10% approval rating?
I would expect that in 4 years everyone will be unhappy again. Romney won't be able to please anyone, O Malley knows that.
When the Dems say that Romney/Ryan would take us back to the Bush years, why don’t the Republicans remind everyone what...
The gas prices were under Bush....
The national debt was under Bush....
The GDP was under Bush....
The Annual Family Income was under Bush?
Bill Cunningham is talking about O’Malley on his show now.
O'Moron is such a disgusting little man. I feel an especially intense loathing of him.
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
