A talk-show host this weekend on MSNBC, widely considered a heavily left-leaning news network, suddenly erupted into a screaming rant after one of her guests suggested Obama wasnt acknowledging the risks entrepreneurs take in Americas economy. What is riskier than living poor in America? Seriously! host Melissa Harris-Perry shouted on her self-titled show yesterday. I am sick of the idea that being wealthy is risky!
Harris-Perry was discussing welfare reform and economic class mobility with a panel of guests.
One guest, Nancy Giles, described as a social commentator, suggested it was public education and low-cost health care that enabled people to move out of lower economic classes.
But Monica Mehta, described as a business/finance expert, countered that class mobility is fueled by entrepreneurs taking risks, and began to imply that Obamas You didnt build that speech was indicative of anti-entrepreneurial bias.
But Mehta didnt have the opportunity to finish her thought.
What is riskier than living poor in America? Seriously! What in the world is riskier than being a poor person in America? the host interrupted. I live in a neighborhood where people are shot on my street corner. I live in a neighborhood where people have to figure out how to get their kid into school because maybe it will be a good school and maybe it wont. I am sick of the idea that being wealthy is risky! No! There is a huge safety net that whenever you fail, well catch you and catch you and catch you! Being poor is what is risky. We have to create a safety net for poor people, and when we wont because they happen to look different from us, it is the pervasive ugliness. We cannot do that!

“Create a safety net for the poor”?? What about the welfare hammock?
We have to CREATE a safety net?!?

Yep.
This is from 2009 and doesn't include any government dole, including free cell phones...;
Whoops, actually from 2005.
1. Doesn't know or won't acknowledge the difference between risk capital and social risk.
2. Apparently is unaware of that we have had a social safety net in this country since the founding of the Republic and a progressive, government run safety net for at least 47 years
3. Apparently has never asked herself whether the decline in the non-material well-being of the poorest decile of American society over the last forty years or so - measured by things like percentage of intact two parent households, number of children born out wedlock, drug addiction and crime and incarceration rates - might have been accelerated by the safety net programs of the Great Society.
There are questions to be asked here. Primarily, in an increasingly competetive world in which education, responsibility, the willingness to work hard, and discipline are becoming necessary not just to prosper but to survive, how should society, not government but society, deal with a group of people of all races, that does not seem to value education, responsibility, self-restraint, and respect for lawful behavior? Given the social decline of our poorest decile during a period of time when we have had a plethora of federal and federally sponsored programs for relief of the poor, it is not at clear that more of the same would be a good thing. It is, however, a problem that needs to be addressed.
That gal has quite the lisp.
Well, yeah. Neighborhood full of trayvons lookin’ for justice. Risky.
At the very least she has no concept of the many types of risks that businesses face:
market risk
credit risk
liquidity risk
insolvency risk
political risk
technology risk
societal preferences risk
To this idiot, standing on a street corner while obozo’s sons try to kill each other is the only “risk” she can comprehend.
First let me say I think New Orleans is a beautiful city.
But also has a very high crime rate and poor educational system.
If the lady lives there and is spouting this babble there is a serious disconnect. Or she is a kook. Or she is a liar.
When DON'T they ? That's what you get when you hire nothing but Funny Farm Fascists.
Someone that has her money and education would not move into a high crime area unless she has a death wish.
That is not only priceless...it’s true.
I hope you don’t mind is I steal it to use in future arguments with some of my less enlightened aquaintances.
If it doesn’t send them into a complete tizzy...it will certainly shut them up.:)
