When Antonio Villaraigosa said this summer that he would like someday to be governor of California, he acknowledged an ambition that appeared until recently to have slipped beyond his reach.
The mayor of Los Angeles, beleaguered by the weak economy, an extramarital affair and a series of shortcomings at City Hall, was re-elected by an underwhelming margin in 2009.
Los Angeles magazine put a photograph of him on its cover behind the headline, "Failure: So much promise, so much disappointment," and Villaraigosa sat out the gubernatorial race the following year.
In recent months, however, the former Assembly speaker has regained some of his old swagger. In Charlotte, N.C., this week to gavel in the Democratic National Convention as its chairman, Villaraigosa is now considered a potential candidate for an appointment in a second Obama administration.
He also has rejoined Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris at the top of a list of Democrats considered likely contenders for governor or U.S. Senate.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh pleazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeee. His name alone is a reason not to watch this bunch and their DNC hate show.
He’s the best they’ve got? Wow.
“Tony Villar”, as he is often referred to locally, is a joke!
Freak show.
Perfect description of what a Lightweight Airhead looks and sounds like. Hey California! This is the problem.
The name “Villar” is the name on his birth certificate.
His last name “Villaraigosa” was derived as he merged his last name with his wife’s last name. I think he was proving to her that he was liberal and would change his name, that he didn’t expect her to just change her name to his name.
So feminist types have to love this guy. He changed his last name for his wife.
Just gotta be a smooth talkin’ charming, incompetent, leftist ashole loved by the LSM and presto-—on to greater DNC glory and adoration ya go.
he’s done wonders for the people of Los Angeles (extreme sarcasm)
>>Tony Villar, as he is often referred to locally, is a joke!<<
That is his real name. “Villaraigosa” is an invented name he gave himself.
And John and Ken said it best: he is a caricature of a politician. Every joke and stereotype about politicians wrapped up in one slimy little ball.
In my neck of the woods, that's what ya call *chutzpah*!
Will this imp actually be standing on a chair?
He’s too extreme for normal Americans. His star ain’t going anywhere. He has the illegals and the white liberals suffering from white guilt and that’s about it.
A typical Democrat rising star... the failed mayor of a failed city in a failed state!
I think you're wrong on that.I just looked up Villaraigosa in a Spanish/English dictionary and it means "he whose family runs swiftly in the darkness".
Tony Vilar is the worst mayor in the history of modern Los Angeles and the liberal media is propagating him as a rising star.
I believe his wife’s dad was a politician of note, that’s why he added her name. Then he cheated on her with a local newscaster. Believe his wife took him back.
Oh nothey’re having a Democratic National Convention while Louisiana
is suffering?
Riiiiiiiight.
We’ve been down this road before. Villaraigosa has no chance whatsoever at higher office in California. Nobody. Wants. Him.
How about doing some real reporting, Sacramento Bee, instead of this press release, and talk about how Villaraigosa was all set to run for governor last time around? Exploratory committees. Blah blah blah.
But then, surprise, early polling showed he had no chance. No constituency. None. His candidacy cratered before it even started.
So the CA Dem party, no fools they, told him to sit down and shut up.
As bad as Jerry Brown is, the ex-gang-banging, couldn’t-pass-the-bar, union thug, borderline illiterate Villaraigosa would have been much, much worse.
And now the termed-out mayor of Los Angeles, unemployable except at the public trough, is gonna make a run at governor or the Senate?
Desperate times, I guess...
How many people know that he is the biggest La Raza activist in America today??
