Syria killed Aleppo residents with a new Russian-made “barrel bomb,” large old drums stuffed with explosives, oil and pieces steel that maim, kill and terrorize, the London Telegraph reported Sunday morning.
The homemade bomb spread devastation across a wide swath of the commercial hub, as seen in a video published by the London newspaper.
"The sound was like nothing else I've ever heard. It was an almighty whoosh," rebel fighter Mohammed Ibrahim told the Telegraph. The blast perforated his eardrums, but others, including his cousin, were killed by the bomb, which was dropped by low-flying helicopters.
Rebels are desperately trying to hold on to their strongholds as Syrian President Bashar Assad’s tanks ring the city and helicopters and warplanes bomb from above.
Assad continues to ignore world leaders, but United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon still is declaring that “the primary responsibility rest[s] on the government to halt its use of heavy weapons."

That does sound weird. I’m assuming more than one was dropped? What kind of bomb would a helicopter drop, I guess they weren’t worried about the effects of the blast damaging the copters or something?

Looks like a regular IED. Also, seem implausible that a multi-million dollar fighter/attack airplane is dropping IEDs from the air when they could just as easily drop normal ordinance.
I say it’s an IED that went off early.
See Rambo II in Vietnam. Russians drop a fuel air bomb of that type from a helicopter.
If we had them in Afghanistan, there would be a lot of dead Taliban aholes littering the landscape, esp. since we don’t have any napalm to wipe out valley/hillside ambushes.
Considering a fact someone films it I find it might be terrorists, sorry “rebels”, who blown the thing to blame the gubmint.

Old tactic even depicted in a WWII flick staring Gary Cooper I believe it was “China Road” where he atop a hill rolled down a drum of gas down a hill setting it to go off in a Chinese village of straw houses run by a Chinese War Lord. They had just murdered his men attempting to supply Chang Kai’s Check’s army.
Sounds similar to Fu Gas from the Vietnam conflict that we dropped on the VC.

Syria started the conflict with something in the neighborhood of 40 attack helicopters and 60 heavy lift helicopters. Last I heard they were down to about 20 attacks, due mostly to maintenance and spare parts issues. They’ve been using the heavy lift helos to deliver supplies as the roads are mostly impassible to government supplies. If they’re using the heavy lifters to drop bombs then that is done from high altitude to avoid ground fire. But this indicates they have either lost more attack helicopters (probably to spare parts issues) or the attacks they have are over-taxed. Using the urgently needed heavy lift helicopters indicates that somebody, somewhere is going without needed supplies. The bombing is an indication of weakness and desperation. Also, tactically, how effective is a bomb of this nature? The effect will be mostly wasted as there probably aren’t many targets worthy of such a large device.
I didn’t hear any helicopters prior to detonation.
