Two-Way Communication

September 2, 2012

Have you ever been stuck in a conversation with someone who talks only about himself? To be polite, you strike up a dialogue by asking questions. The other person proceeds to talk endlessly about himself, and he never once asks you anything. It is all about that person—and nothing about you.

Imagine what it must be like for our heavenly Father to listen to our prayers during our devotional time. We may have read a portion of His Word, but then in prayer we swiftly shift focus exclusively to our needs. We ask for help in solving a problem, providing for a financial need, or healing a physical ailment. But the passage we’ve just read doesn’t even enter into our prayers. What God has just said to us goes largely unacknowledged.

Apparently the writer of Psalm 119 did not have this perspective. Instead, he sought God’s help in understanding the Word: “Open my eyes,” he said, “that I may see wondrous things from Your law” (v.18). And as he prayed he expressed how he treasured God’s Word, calling it his “delight” (v.24).

Let’s develop a discipline of praying our response to the Word. It just might transform our devotional time. Bible reading and prayer should reflect a two-way communication.

Lord, I’ve just read Your Word to me in Psalm 119.
Give me a strong desire like the psalmist’s to keep Your
Word. Show me what I can do to make it my delight and
counselor. Open my eyes and heart to learn from You.
Listen to God’s Word then pray about what you’ve heard.

Read: Psalm 119:17-24

Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors. —Psalm 119:24

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

There are several things that need to be pointed out in this essay:

Yesterday, I related the story of a young man who had been labeled as "retarded,"

Who had labeled this kid as "retarded"? Answer: Likely nearly all of his government school teachers, principals, and possibly a government school psychologist of some sort.

That the child found **one** teacher that had the courage to think differently was extremely **lucky**! Think of the many children who did not have his luck and went through their lives wrongly believing they were "retarded" or ADD, ADHD, or had some other alphabet disability.

Maybe the lesson to be learned is nearly all government teachers, principals, and psychologists are incompetent, have something to gain by wrongly labeling a child "retarded", or they evil. Maybe the best action for a parent to take is to NEVER let a child step foot in a government school.

"What magical formula," he asked, "had she had used to pull these boys out of the slums and into successful careers?" Her eyes sparkled as she said with a gentle smile, "It's really very simple; I LOVED those boys."

One of the most cherished passages in the Christian scriptures (I Corinthians 13) concludes with the statement that three things -- faith, hope and love --

The author of this story is making a mistake that many modern Christians make.

The "love" spoken of in Corinthians is translated as "charity" in the King James version. "Charity" at one time in our Christian history was plainly understood to mean the type of love that Christ showed to us. Charity then is far far far **more** that merely feeling love toward another as we understand the word, "love" to mean today, and as the author of this essay **misapplies** Corinthians's word "love" in his essay. Charity, or the Corinthians's word "love", means total devotion, willingness to sacrifice all, even to go as far as Christ's Atonement.

I encourage others to do a Google search on the words: The Christian meaning of the word charity.
