Newt Gingrich on Thursday came to Todd Akins defense, calling the embattled Missouri Senate candidate honorable and sincere.
Speaking to POLITICOs Mike Allen at the Playbook Afternoon Snack event here, the former House speaker said the controversy surrounding Akins recent legitimate rape comments was a good example of why the power structure in Washington sometimes ought to take a deep breath.
Todd Akin made a mistake. Hes an honorable guy, hes a sincere guy. He said something stupid. There was a firestorm, Gingrich said.

Who made that inappropriate joke regarding Akin???
Tell your boss to suck it up and apologize. If he needs to learn how I'm sure that Akin can help him.
Yeah know Betty if you met me at a diner counter, and the conversation went into such things, as Todd Akin stated for the record, such as 'legitimate rape" and that the female reproductive system shuts down during rape, would you consider me a creep or a legitimate candidate for the US Senate.
Dallas are you in Dallas? Apparently you are isolated from real time and real events. Akin did go to Tampa, but he had ads running in my local media apologizing the whole week after he forgot who he was talking to.
Akin is not alone in suffering as you call it hubris, you seem to have more than enough for you and Akin put together....
Ditto everything you so well said!!!!! Foot-in-mouth’s a permanent condition for the dems, but who notices?
“When McCaskill unleashes the lions from her war chest”?.....She has cats on her chest?.....lots of animals in your comments.....lions and tigers and bears and sharks, oh my!
Good for Newt
I think Newt now sees that the attacks on Akin were merely because he was pro-Life Conservative...not for his comments
When is Karl Rove quitting Fox for his pro-murder comments?
Go Newt! Thanks for reminding me once again why I voted for you in Pennsylvania this year. Just don’t do any more awkward “two-for-one” speeches with Callista now.
Sounds like Tyler learned his lesson not to abandon conservatives when they’re down after quitting Newt’s campaign last summer and then returning in the fall during Newt’s resurgence.
I'm not against the imaginary GOP-e, I'm against the so-called GOP-e. And I don't particularly care what you call them.
As to whether the female reproductive system "shuts down" or not during forcible (or as Akin put it, "legitimate") rape is simply not a question that "science" has any evidence for, pro or con. I am not aware that science has ever conducted any studies on this issue.
I understand that Akin is a devout Roman Catholic. Which at least among the orthodox of that community, means he's "all in" for the pre-born's right to life.
Even if Akin is wrong about certain facts of reproductive biology, certainly he is right about that.
But this is the very question that the political Left and apparently, also the RNC finds inconvenient to ask during this election year.
Of course, the political Left NEVER wants to ask that question. Indeed, to ask it is forbidden. And they will try to punish the person who DOES raise it, every time. But I call that censorship. And I deplore to see the GOP use such tactics on its own, against its own.
"There are more things on heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy," my dear DallasBiff....
At the end of the day, this dispute strikes me as a tempest in a teapot. It's time to move on and win a Senate seat for Tea Party conservatism.
JMHO FWIW
Joe Biden certainly gets a pass every time....
Thanks so much, Mach9, for your kind words of support!
Give us a break. Your posting history is there for all to see. Everyone knows you were one of the biggest cowards, beating up on Akin louder than anyone else when he was down. We all know you're the last person we'd want to be with in a foxhole.
Good for Newt
I wish Sarah Palin had taken this tact
She disappointed me on this issue
Not only that, but Michele Bachmann was asked about Akin by Greta on FOX this week, and all she said in her reply was how bad McCaskill is and that she hopes the voters look at her record. Tea Partiers know that TRUE Tea Partiers are hard to come by and we won't have any left if we throw them out the first time they make a mistake, even after 12 years of loyal service to the conservative cause.
Aha, so you reveal your true motives. Just like most people who spoke out against Akin, it was based on your disdain for pro-lifers, not on his gaffe.
She still can. Her supporters should tell her to come to her senses and get on the right side of this situation.
He will owe the people of Missouri for his election and to whatever extent that those people are still Republicans.
Joe Biden certainly gets a pass every time....
What about Obie? 57 states, the Austrian language? That should have kept him out of domestic AND foreign policy positions!
Akin’s not being elected as a scientist or a doctor but as a legislator; and he’s made NO mistakes in those areas.
