In a closed-door fundraiser at the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove reportedly joked about the murder of Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin.
We should sink Todd Akin. If hes found mysteriously murdered, dont look for my whereabouts! joked Rove, according to a Businessweek report of the fundraiser.
Sheelah Kolhatkar, an editor for Bloomberg Businessweek, was invited to the event as a guest of top Republican donor who was aware she was a journalist. The invite gave her a behind-the-scenes look at the otherwise-private event.
At the event, Rove urged attendees to urge Akin to get out of the race, citing Missouris Senate race as a major obstacle to Republicans taking over the Senate.
We have five people who are interested in replacing Akin as the Senate candidate, Rove said. We dont care who the nominee is, other than get Akin out.
Rove and other top Republicans called on Akin to leave the race after his controversial comments two weeks ago on legitimate rape and his mistaken comment about how conception through rape rarely occurs.
I am praying for Todd Akin. I think what was done to him was underhanded and dirty, and as much as I despised the gop e before, I loathe and have nothing but contempt for them them now. THIS is exactly what they did with murkowski in Alaska so a true CONSERVATIVE would lose. And make no mistake, they would rather have mccaskill than a straight up Conservative who would puncture their balloons.
I hope Akin wins and wins big. I would make a fortune at the duct tape concession.
sent him some serious words!
Who do we write or call to ask for his resignation?
He should still be fired from Fox and picked up and questioned by the FBI.
Only a very sick and twisted person makes comments about murdering a sitting member of congress.
Yep -- this is just the start.
There is no call for that comment and he needs to contact all of the people who were at that meeting and send them a letter and apologize to them as well for making such comments.
Todd Akin is a sitting Congressman and you just don't do that to a member of Congress.
And he should seriously consider tendering his resignation from Crossroads.
You’re right.
This is good news.

If Mr. Akin has the temerity to win his election, one wonders how he will be received in Washington. He will be persona non grata among the GOP elite, but we know that already. But he may also become a lightning rod for hard-right conservatives. I sense he will become as staunchly reliable a voice for conservatism as were Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond. The Missouri election may not be over jes yet...”
I hope you're right that Karl Rove is reading Free Republic, or getting forwarded items by his staff.
This whole situation was handled badly by Akin at the beginning — obviously he agrees since he's apologized — and also handled badly by the national GOP.
I really, really hope this gets solved soon and we can all move on. The only good thing is this happened in August, when candidates still have time to recover, instead of in late October a few days or weeks before the November election.
I do not share the strongly negative opinion of Karl Rove voiced by a number of people on Free Republic. He's done a lot of good things in the past, he's a very smart man, and while I don't agree with him on some important issues and some key underlying principles, I do believe he wants Barack Obama gone as much as the rest of us.
On that point, at least, we are in agreement.
Roves remark is as sick and deranged as the liberals on twitter calling for Ann Romneys death. His remark is far more damaging to the party than Akins remark. It feeds into the Democrat claim that Republicans are violent.
At the very least Rove needs to be fired from Fox and never invited on a conservative talk show again.
So sick of Rove, so sick of Huckabee, so sick of the boring and obnoxious GOP establishment.
GOPe bump
This is disgusting. Hard to believe someone as politically experienced as Rove would make such a remark.
Yes. Some kind of penalty or censure should be imposed.
Rove has crossed the line. The FBI, the Secret Service, or even the State police should be involved in this for threatening murder. This is just crazy that no one is perusing this. Like another person posted; Rove is a corrupt man. He wants Aiken gone; to put his very own handpicked candidate in line. We need to replace Rove though looks to be too late now. Rove’s accomplishment to have a moderate republican party is almost complete.
same old rove; just showing a bit more skirt to us “knuckle draggers.” must have been celebrating a bit too much about ramming down their hand-picked, liberal nominee. just got a bit to happy. maybe even had a few celebratory drinks.
oh well, at least our guy is getting “murdered” for believing in the sanctity life. that makes me want to write another check (akin.org).
Sad when a former star doesn’t know it’s time to step out of the limelight.
Not funny at all.
We no longer have patience with “career” conservatives. When he said something humiliating and destructive, tea parties got fed up quickly. I don’t have heroes. All these pols have a shelf life.
I think people pay attention to the turd because he has so much money under his control...that he spends on the GOP-e candidates.
Rove is a despicable creature. Always has been...in my view.
There are two liberal liberal parties in America who are despotic and power mad and they only differ on the matter of capitalism versus communism and so we have the choice of the lesser of two evils and so I will vote for the lesser evil Romney who can help Americans if he wins. Yet it is time for conservatives to depart the less liberal rino party after these elections and begin the new conservative party for all who love God and family and country.
Rotflol!!!
