Michigan State Jewish student attacked at party, knocked unconscious; ADL "horrified by violent assault."
A Jewish student at Michigan State University said he was attacked at an off-campus party in what he is calling a hate crime.
Just before the assault, which broke his jaw, Zach Tennen said his attackers asked him if he was Jewish, according to reports.
Tennen, 19, a resident of suburban Detroit, said he answered in the affirmative. He told WDIV-TV in Detroit that his attackers also "were making Nazi and Hitler symbols and they said they were part of the KKK."
Tennen was knocked unconscious during the attack, which took place early Sunday morning near MSU's East Lansing campus. The assailants stapled his mouth shut through his gums.
Others at the party watched as Tennen called a taxi to take him to the hospital. His mouth was surgically wired shut.
His family has called the Anti-Defamation League regarding the assault.
ADL responded to the parents of the victim and were in contact with local law enforcement and university officials.
“We are horrified by this violent assault and allegations that the student may have been viciously attacked because he was Jewish,” said Betsy Kellman, ADL Detroit Regional Director.
“We are confident that the East Lansing Police will thoroughly investigate this deeply troubling case and, given the allegations, treat it as a possible hate crime. We hope the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice.”
The university in an email statement referred all questions about the police investigation to the East Lansing Police Department, as the incident occurred off campus.
"Michigan State University's Student Affairs and Services office has reached out to the family of the student who said he was assaulted in East Lansing to provide the academic and other support the student needs," the statement also said.

Following a vicious attack on a Michigan State student on Sunday, in which two men beat a Jewish student unconscious before stapling his mouth shut, the Anti Defamation League has reached out to the victims family, and released a statement on Tuesday condemning the incident.

Zachary Tennen, a sophomore at Michigan State University, was approached by two men at a party early on Sunday and asked if he was Jewish, according to Tennen’s mother. The men proceeded to raise their right arms in a Nazi salute and said “Heil Hitler”, before beating Tennen unconscious. According to Tennen’s mother, 20 people watched while her son had his mouth stapled by the two suspects.
The ADL “has spoken to the parents of the victim, Zachary Tennen, a sophomore, and has been in contact with local law enforcement and university officials since first learning of the assault, which took place in the early morning hours of August 26 and reportedly was witnessed by other students,” according to a statement released by the group on Tuesday.
Michigan State has approximately 3,000 Jewish undergraduate students on campus, according to Hillel’s website.

There are violent white supremacists or anti-Semites, organized or wanna-be. But there seem to be more fake incidents than real ones.

According to all the accounts I read, he had surgery.
His lower jaw looks swollen and discolored to me, do you know when this picture was taken?
He described a crack in his lower jaw between his front teeth, yet the first hospital did nothing about it. Then later on he went on his own to another hospital and had his jaw wired shut.
I wonder how anyone could unquestioningly believe one word of this farce. How many kids get punched in a bar or party every night? It is a non-story if he does not embellish it.
Who was angry? Not me.
I was simply pointing our that hate crimes are never comsidered to be directed at Jews and whites.
About the broken jaw, (ok the story could be fake), I broke my ankle, as well as sprained it.
I walked into ambulatory ER, told them what happened and they said, “well you are walking on it so its not broken”.
Told me to come back the next day, if I was still bothered.
I did, that doctor begrudgingly took an xray, my ankle was broken it two spots.
So it’s possible that his jaw was broken and the docs missed it, also several of the articles said he had surgery.
I found this Zachary Tennen interview which confirms my belief that this kid wants only to make the other guy pay, despite the truth otherwise.
Understood and frankly if this hate crime reported by a Jewish guy proves to be made up in any way, that also will be unusual. Hey, maybe the attack happened exactly as he said it but there some strange aspects to the story.
The posted news report at Free Republic has no statements by Police, no statements by medical personnel, and no statements from the 20 people who witnessed the crime.
Do I really need to explain to you two that America gets duped at least twice a year - EVERY year - by some 19 year old college student who presents himself/herself as a victim of a political hate crime?
According to Google, the New York Daily News has the most recent update on this story.
In that report, the Police Chief states that the PD has “not been able to interview” the victim.
Almost three days after the alleged crime the alleged victim has not even made a written statement to Police.
The Police Chief also stated two witnesses have been interviewed.
They state the victim was in the front yard arguing with two males, one of whom punched the victim.
The witnesses heard no racial slurs and saw no mouth stapling.
I don’t doubt his jaw was broken, it’s other parts of the story that are odd. He is claiming behavior by the crowd which the police don’t corroborate.
Also without jumping to any conclusions, this was after a late late night off campus college party, and it’s highly likely a lot of these folks were drunk.
With 20 witnesses, it would be quite a feat to fake stapling your own mouth shut — not to mention breaking your own jaw.
