Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be formally nominated this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Its his first and best chance to tell his personal story and warm up before a national audience in prime time. (Did you know his real first name is Willard?).
The GOP ticket is still trailing the competition in national polls. Republicans must make a tricky pitch: Convince voters that the reserved, wealthy businessman can save America from a personally popular incumbent.
As the four-day confab kicks off in Florida, here are a few words to the wise men of the GOP.
You need a Plan B, in case Hurricane Isaac drops by for the festivities. Even if the storm skirts Tampa and lands elsewhere, TV viewers are likely to flip away to the weather channel early and often. A bunch of politicians sitting in a convention hall is no match for the drama Mother Nature can whip up.
Keep the rabble-rousing right wing on the plantation. Remember the crowd who kept Romney dancing during the primary season?
Dont worry they wont let you forget. Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul, the Ricks (Santorum and Perry), and The Donald. Romneys people wisely declined to give most of them speaking roles at the convention, but where theres a camera, theres a way.
Round up the women folk and a preppy black couple or two. Youll need some props to preempt the rainbow display of blacks, Asians, Latinos, LGBTQIs, Wal-Mart moms and the multitudinous other demographic slices the Democrats will roll out at their convention in Charlotte.
That might be tough. Black voters, for example, prefer President Barack Obama over Romney by 94 percent to 0 percent, says a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.
Bury the Republican National Committees convention platform. Its been Akin-ized. Missouri U.S. Rep. and GOP Senate nominee Todd Akins comment on legitimate rape has plunged the Romney campaign into a losing debate about abortion and womens rights.
The platform calls for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion in all cases, including rape and incest. That view, an anathema to independent women voters, has been championed by not only Akin, but also U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romneys very own running mate.
Finally, its Etch-a-Sketch time. Romney desperately needs to reshape his stiff, gaffe-prone campaign. The convention will be his best shot to remake that image and convince Americans that he is a preferable alternative to Obama.
In March, at the height of the Republican primary battles, Romney campaign lieutenant Eric Fehrnstrom sparked a furor when he suggested his boss would run a different kind of general election campaign.
I think everything changes, Fehrnstrom said in an appearance on CNN. Its almost like an Etch-a-Sketch. You kind of shake it up and restart all over again.
Shake it up, baby.
Another useful tool for the demwit party. Think fo yoself sistah.
“Black voters, for example, prefer President Barack Obama over Romney by 94 percent to 0 percent....”
NO RACISM HERE!
OH! I get it “(LIBERAL ‘COLUMNIST’ BLOWS A GASKET) translates to “BARF ALERT”.
NO problem.
>> Republicans must make a tricky pitch: Convince voters that the reserved, wealthy businessman can save America from a personally popular incumbent.
That may be the most rose-colored liberal characterization of this election that I’ve seen. “Personally popular incumbent” is a very carefully worded term ... because his professional popularity ain’t so pretty.
There is a “tricky” argument here, and it isn’t Romney’s. Obama must convince people that Romney being “reserved”, “wealthy”, and a “businessman”, and that Obama’s “personal popularity” are all matter more important than Obama’s professional performance. I just don’t see that argument succeeding.
The real truth is, Mitt doesn’t even need to convince voters that this “personally popular incumbent” has done a lousy job. They’re convinced, and right there for the taking. All Mitt has to do is take them.

UGH, this drivel is actually published in the Chicago Sun Times?!
If that’s truly the case, then blacks are more owned by the ‘rats now than by the slaveholders over 150 years ago.
IT’S A MAN, BABY!
Supposedly they have put the delegations for NY, Guam, and Puerto Rico in the front for TV, but that is not racist. It is smart.
I guess the 6% will be voting for either the LIBERTARIAN PARTY, the GREEN PARTY or another very minor third party!!
“Since then she has been a reporter, assistant editor, and now editor and publisher of The Chicago Reporter, an investigative monthly that explores racial and urban affairs in Chicago. In 1985, she was press secretary for Mayor Harold Washington.”
So in other words, she's connected to Valerie Jarrett - at the least - and is just another sycophant media person with an agenda - not to mention sounding very suspiciously racist.
Wait. Wha? This just keeps getting longer.
L = Lesbians
G = Gay
B = Bisexual

Q = Is this Queer or Questioning?
I = I have no idea what "I" stands for here.
Goodness. How many letters and people can they tack onto this?
Wal-Mart moms
I would have thought that they would be in our tent. Good liberals don't shop at the evil Walmart.
Yeah, Laura baby. Did you know Barky's real last name is "Soetoro" and that he was a foreign exchange student from Kenya?
THIS is all they've got? Romney will win in a landslide.
She hates white people. Especially all those white boys who didn’t call the next day.
After the ugly white boys paid her $30, there would be no reason to call her back. ;>)
the ugly white boys = the blind drunk white boys
Barf Alert with possible entertainment value on the side.
PROJECTION
Recall in the 2008 election cycle when Barack Obama’s staff was caught telling people (by race) who should stand behind candidate Obama and just where they should stand to create the politically correct racial demographic mix to appeal to voters.
Irrational? ;-)
