A new Washington Post-ABC News poll has Mitt Romney up by a point over Barack Obama 47% to 46%. (46% is a truly horrible number for an incumbent.) But it is going to take more than a few narrow polls to change what I sense to be the widespread mood here that Romney is very narrowly losing, but the race remains winnable.
So it was with great interest that I listened to the thoughts a longtime, much-respected GOP operative, whom I will nickname the Gloomy Guru. Among GGs observation:
Romney will win North Carolina
Ohio is iffy in GGs view, though one very smart, very connected Ohio GOPer thinks the state is lost
New Mexico is lost
Colorado looking good
Pennsylvania is fools gold, not going to happen
Wisconsin can happen
Virginia will be a dogfight, is critical

My bet is that most of the electorate has not - nor will they ever - know the name Todd Akin...
This race is very close with very few undecideds. I don’t think anything will happen that will change the minds of the people whose minds are already made up. The key to the election will be turnout. That’s why the Obama campaign is scrounging for every voter they can find. Romney will win if he gets turnout in the critical States.
Most people hate Perot. But he did one thing everyone can like. He fired Rollins.
Huckabee hates Romney because Romney believes satan is Jesus’ brother. The Akin fiasco gives Huckabee a chance to hurt Romney and yet allows him to stay in the republican party.
I hope this does not hinge on turnout.
Turnout can be obtained easily with freebies and promises of more freebies. Already kids I know who have gone back to college are telling me that the campuses are awash in buzz about Obama proposing to forgive all their student loans.
Given the thoroughly socialist history he lugs around from Massachusetts, and his plenty guilty cram down of Romney/Obamacare there, along with its abortion provisions slammed down on the Catholic conscience, her church affiliated charities and missions, the guy plucks up a Catholic running mate and that’s suppose to be enough?
Conservatives are as suspicious of Romney on liberty issues as they are of Obama, and they should be.
Under these conditions and with his lousy record all we have to go on, this is not the year to be “vague” for very long. Not all of us are entirely sold on the differences between Obama and Romney yet. I have no use for either one of them actually.
We are in a trap, period. And, what happen to the story on the Rules changes proposed by Romney to shut out and shut down conservatives for the convention in ‘16?
I'd change that to "Nutty Republican"
Romney is running a fine campaign and has done everything well to date. The time to expand on his plans is AFTER both conventions.
So, will you be voting to stop the bleeding in America and toss the Kenyan or will you hand your vote to Obamugabe by sitting home on election day.
PA hasn’t been won by Republicans since 1988 even with Republicans Senators or a Republican governor.
Haven’t decided on Romney yet, but can sure fill up the down ticket ballot if that helps you. Implying that anyone will stay home because they are waiting on Romney to ever say something worth voting for is rookie speak. Who even KNOWS anyone staying home?
Lol, are you serious? Have you read the posts here from the anti Romney crowd? They are rife with claims of staying home and not voting for Romney under any circumstances.
If I understand you correctly my short time on this forum somehow makes my observations and ideas somewhat less credible than some one who has been a long time member? Is that right? Care to explain the logic behind this absurd statement? Even making a claim such as that highlights your intellectual paucity.
“The Akin thing is KILLING US, folks...
All it does is reinforce the media-created stereotype of the ‘Stoopid Republican!’.”
Well Romney can always remind the dems that he was for abortion before he was against it... that might earn him some points.
I have said nothing of your birth date on FR, so take your fire to the target. The way liberal trolls and issue trolls and “wannabe” competitive site pests pass through Jim’s house here, you can expect some hazing until you prove yourself.
To the point, there is STILL no one I know on FR, or personally, who is staying home, but plenty yet who may not vote the top of the ticket. You badgering and bullying about such a thing being a vote for Obama is a tired, desperate tactic that belittles the conscience and even the wisdom and reason of FReepers whose intellect exceeds yours and mine, who stand for something missing among most Americans, and who fall for nothing.
Romney is a fail in every way politically. If you want to “fall” for anything and stand for nothing, then good for you, but I need more time before falling, and may or may not.
LOL, brilliant, positively f'n brilliant. No vote for the Rep presidential candidate but a vote for a Rep. Senate or House candidate. Great move since this butthole in the WH doesn't CARE about the Senate or the House and simply goes around them issuing EO whenever he feels like it
"..you can expect some hazing until you prove yourself."
But you see it's not hazing. It is used against and others as PROOF we are wrong in what we say. It is an example of towering ignorance and stupidity to claim someone who just signed up here hasn't the experience or knowledge of anyone else here simply because he or she is a "N00B" Let me make it simpler so perhaps you can more easily "get it". Suppose FR had a section for Physicists and Albert Einstein were still alive. Further suppose he came across the site and decided to sign up. He then gets into a discussion with a long time member and gives his own opinions about say the theory of relativity or perhaps something about the law of photoelectric effect Let's say his positions are in conflict with the "old timer". The old timer then does as you suggest is appropriate and calls out our friend Al Einstein because he is a "N00B"
There can never be a circumstance in which a refutation of a position in any area is legitimate unless it is based on ONLY the content of the statement being criticized. Your position in this is indefensible.
Okay. Have it your way, skippy. Enjoy your tired, typical and pedestrian newbie rants.
Pffft.
LOL, my way indeed.
You’ve been taken down by simple logic.
And by a “N00B”
How EMBARRASSING for you.
