New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.
The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.
Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.
The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.
The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

BTTT ~ as I was saying about NYC cops, they got too many guns on the street eh! (?s)
New assignment: MUCH more range time.
Well, gee, everybody had to get in on the action because the cops don’t get much action in a place with strict gun laws. Yes, that is sarcasm.
I’ll be the SWAT boys were really hacked off because they didn’t have time to put on their black ninja outfits and join the action.
Are we going to have a new term “going coastal?”
Does anyone know what cal they carry? .40cal or 9mm? 16 shots from just 2 LEOs, is a lot of misses.
Crowded street. The “victims” should consider themselves lucky.
Probably tea party types unhappy about Obamacare.
Is Obama going to say the police acted stupidly?
Can’t wait to hear Nanny Bloomberg’s spin on this one.
Misses? I thought they shot nine people?
You’ve got to speak to people in NYC in their language, so tell them “There is this new GREEN ammo called hollowpoint that reduces carbon footprints and causes fewer thrushots that risk innocent civilian casualties. Ditto for frangible ammo.”
If you don’t say “green” and “carbon” then whatever you mention to them just gets ignored.
The closest I've ever come to passing a police firing range test was qualifying with an M-14 (and M-16) during BCT.Unlike qualifying in BCT,I would think taking the police test would involve movement of the police recruit and/or the target.Add to that the fact that you're talking handgun vs rifle and I would think that the police test would be tougher. Then, out "in the field",you have the stress of a situation. Can't be easy...even at close range.I just hope that no slimey lawyer seeks punitive damages or "pain and suffering" for a client rather than just reimbursement for medical expenses.Although in NYC,you *know* that the lawyers are going to go for serious $$$!
I used to work ‘up the road’ at Rock Center, for many years. IIRC, there’s a lot of concrete, steel and brick ricochet material in those NYC ‘canyons’.
Never miss a chance to throw a dig at a former military even if it was forty years ago.
“Police: All Empire State shooting victims were wounded by officers”
except of coarse for the guy the perp killed. Stupid headline
And no dogs were shot either
