New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.
The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.
Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.
The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.
The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

There was a police officer in my city who was seriously wounded several years ago when a guy pulled a gun and shot him during a traffic stop. He was on the ground, gut shot, and managed to pull his gun, shoot and kill the perp. He said that during the whole incident, everything was moving in slow motion and he could hear his range instructor in his head saying, “SQUEEZE the trigger! SQUEEZE the trigger!”
A revised training program for the NYPD should do it.
Better training and more range time would aid Police officers in learning to control their guns much better and greatly improve their accuracy.
LOL!
NYPD uses the 9mm in round nose full metal jacket configuration. This round is a lose -lose. Not as immediately effective against the bad guy, more likely to overpenetrate and hit bystanders. Hollow points are not only more effective, but less likely to go through and through and hit anyone else.
Last, that NYPD technique of magazine emptying is also a redirection of server training deficiencies.
They are an embarrassment.
Wowzer, just saw it! Yikes, that’s some shaky tactical work and they’re lucky it wasn’t worse.
But then so are all the rest of NYC "employees".
Maybe Bloomie could compromise on that idea and just have the cops patrol without ammunition! /s ;^)
Doesn’t the NYPD use some insane trigger pull on their Glocks, like 11 lb.?
I did, and am truly amazed that one or both cops are still alive. The shooter had them in a major disadvantage for 2-3 secs, easily enough time to take them down.
The cops used fine judgment. The should have immediately shot him. The problem is that they use a very poor style of bullet, and have horrendous marksmanship.
Lawsuits are used to correct such goings on.
If Doomberg wasn’t a nanny-stater, and we get someone in office that trusts the people at large to be responsible in defending themselves, then it would’ve been over before the 911 dispatcher sent out a couple of units.
Me too; I happened upon the breaking CNN article and was stunned. I’d think Bloom-Turd & Kelly would have covered-it-up to avoid many millions in certain lawsuits and much criticism.

Was that I think when White Snake was playing?
9mm
I was walking through Times Square once when this kid came flying past me and I heard all this shouting. I turned around and two cops on foot came running up the sidewalk and people were pointing this way and that and yelling. "There he goes! He went that way!" Then a cop on a horse came through the crowd. It was crazy and you could tell that the cops didn't trust anything people were shouting. Scary part was, you didn't know where to go to get out of the way. Fortunately no one was shooting in that situation.
Maybe Bloomberg has been following the hiring practices of Holder’s DOJ:
Holder Justice Department Recruits Dwarfs, Schizophrenics, and the Intellectually Disabled
The PJ Tatler has obtained documents from the Justice Department detailing efforts to recruit attorneys and staff who are dwarfs or who have psychiatric disabilities or severe intellectual disabilities. On May 31, 2012, Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez issued a directive to affirmatively recruit people with these targeted disabilities.

Read the post. 3 hit by gunshots, the rest were hit by fragments flying.
