Missourians recanting; Todd Akin just might win. (Vanity)

One of my Missouri friends called me back last evening and he has recanted. He is still pissed at Akin but, he's going to vote for him because he can't stand McCaskill. The surprising part was this: He said that everybody he has talked to, about this, within the past couple of days, feels just like he does. Akin may be semi-brain dead, but they cannot and will NOT vote for McCaskill. There are 73 days before Election Day (counting today). I have a feeling than when a lot of people, who are angry at Akin now, walk into that voting booth, they just will NOT be able to vote for McCaskill and will pull the lever for Akin. If I lived in Missouri, that would be me.

I've got a feeling cooler heads will prevail over the next 73 Days and a lot of people will swing back to Akin, simply out of hatred for her thighness. The first poll that shows the race tied or Akin one point ahead; it's gonna be on. Man, if Akin dude does pull out a win that would be the shock heard 'round the world and Claire McCaskill would have to be put on suicide watch.

What is the alternative for those who don’t want McCaskill???

Simple, a conservative, pro life candidate who shares their views on the economy, Obamacare, taxes, etc. You would think that would be Akin, but he removed himself from that discussion and became the guy who stuck his foot in his mouth. Women and Independents will choose McCaskill over Akin and McCaskill has $12 million to convince them that their emotional reaction is correct. Its hopeless unless he is replaced on the ballot.

Will the voters reelect McCaskill to keep Obamacare in place or choose Akin, the guy who will vote to repeal it?

With Akin on the ballot, this won't be the question. Women and Independents will vote for McCaskill rather than for the guy who stuck his foot in his mouth. Elections are often about emotional decisions and Akin made up quite a few emotional minds. Reason, logic, other issues no longer matter and that's the point.

One showing of a 15 second commercial showing a mushroom cloud scared the American public and there wasn't anything that logic or rhetoric could do to save Barry Goldwater. It's just the way these things work.

It's hopeless only if you think Missouri voters are dumber than a sack of rocks. Do you think the same situation would obtain if the same circumstances occurred in Kansas?

If they do then they are foolishly voting for the one who gave them Obamacare -- and they are not that foolish.

Kansas elected Sebelius as Governor, so they are quite capable of doing stupid things. I am suggesting that Missouri does not have to do the stupid thing and reelect McCaskill, but with Akin on the ballot, they will.

Elections are often about emotional decisions and Akin made up quite a few emotional minds. Reason, logic, other issues no longer matter and that's the point.

We had an election in 2008 that was more about emotion than reason. So we now have a radical Marxist in the WH and the most unqualified person ever to occupy the office, our Community Organizer in Chief.

I have a little more faith in the American voter not to repeat the same mistake again. I wonder why all the Rep gloom and doom types never mention what happened in 2010 and the rise of the Tea Party. I can understand why the Dems try to discount it, but I don't understand why Reps have collective amnesia about the most historic election since 1938 in terms of Rep gains.

We have a $16 trillion national debt, over 8% unemployment for more than 42 months straight, trillion dollar deficits every year of the Obama administration, high gas prices approaching almost double what it was when Obama took office, 46 million people on food stamps up 14 million since Obama took office, median incomes have declined by $4,000, and we have Obamacare, a huge new expansion of the welfare state that will add 18 million to Medicaid and eventually destroy our health care delivery system.

So Missouri voters are going to reelect a senator who supported Obama's policies in lockstep. Many of them, if you believe the latest Mason-Dickson poll, will split their votes with more voting for McCaskill than voting for Obama. They will reelect a senator who will not support the Romney policies. That is a major assumption. Let's look at the polls a month from now. I bet McCaskill has already hit her high water mark in terms of favorability. When the emotion and media hysteria die down, McCaskill's rating will decline as well.

By election day, most conservatives will admire Todd Akin.

Most conservatives admire Todd Akin today, certainly those who know him do. That's not the point. He can't win with the conservative vote alone, he must have enough of the Independent vote to get him over 50%. That's what he can't do. He will get the conservative vote, of that you can be confident, but he will not get enough of the Independents to beat McCaskill. And, he is perhaps the only Republican in Missouri who can't beat her.

WOW God I hope your right..If somehow Akin can win it will be wonderful, I will be the 1st to eat crow(even though I doubt it tastes good LOL) I guess its true, people do have a short term memory when it comes to stuff like this. McCaskill would be a disaster for Missouri, the more people realize that, the more of a chance Akin has to win

It’s shameful the way our own party treated Akin, for just misspeaking.

Until Akin's gaffe, I thought conservatives were less susceptible to mass hysteria than other elements of society, but I was wrong.

Well somebody has. There has been a 20 point swing in the polls. It went from Akin up by 11 to down by 9 now. Somebody changed their mind.

It hasn't translated into a 20 point increase in support for McCaskill. Her support went from 45-49% in the St. Louis Post Dispatch poll. A 4 point jump in the height of the controversy isn't exactly earth shattering.

Thanks for the link. Akin is the kind of senator we need in DC to hold the rinos feet to the fire..not the type we want to toss to the winds. I sent him a donation and have noticed he is gaining support on several sites.
Besides he also served 8 yrs in the Army National Guard which is something Obama or Romney can’t claim.
I am going to share your link with some tea party groups.

Oh God bless you! and you are exactly right. Maybe Akin is too conservative for the republican party? he is a fighter and I am going to fight for him. Great to know there are others like you supporting him.

You're in denial. This is painfully obvious.

No, I’m not in denial. This has been a terrible debacle Akin caused and I have reconciled myself to the fact that we will lose this seat. But, I’m thinking it might tighten up and be a race. There are still Dem Senate seats we’re going to pick up....enough to get control of the Senate. Those seats would be MT, NV, ND, FL and OH. We will lose ME to the Dems, but that’s the only GOP Seat they’re gonna take. They’re gonna have hell holding on to what they have. And, if Romney/Ryan win, all we need are 50 Seats. And, btw, my condolences on being stuck in New Orleans; wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

The hammers of Hell are upon him despite living an exemplary life, public and private, including being a devout family man with six children and three sons who served in the USMC.

Kabar, they're trying to Quayle him.

You say potAto, I say potahtoe, same bit.

Quayle used an archaic spelling (still in my dictionary). Akin brought up that forcible rape (what Whoopie Golberg called "rape-rape") may have different physiological effects than less undesired (alcohol-fueled?) coitus or sex which would have been consensual if the ages were slightly different.

The bottom line, though is the real reason for the attack on him is his steadfast position that the child should not suffer death for someone else's crime.

That gets obscured by the kerfluffle over terminology.

TAMPA — Missouri GOP delegates are rejecting the heavy-handed push by Mitt Romney and national Republicans to boot Todd Akin from their state’s Senate race, revealing a split among Republicans that could imperil the party’s effort to take back the chamber in the fall campaign.

In interviews with POLITICO, delegates argued that Akin could still win the race in the conservative state, pushing back against the notion that his remarks on rape were a death blow to his Senate candidacy. Several delegates here in Tampa seemed angry at the national party, saying the decision to withhold millions of dollars in campaign funding is the real impediment in their effort to oust Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in November.

Akin is an endangered species as far as republicans go...there are very few true conservatives left. Akin ranks up there with Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Allen West. I am voting Akin!
