The Obama campaign looked to capitalize on Mitt Romney's joke about the president's birth certificate Friday afternoon, with campaign traveling press secretary Jen Psaki denouncing a "pattern" of comments from the Republican challenger.
"This is the kind of gutterball politics that will and should turn the American people off," Psaki told MSNBC. "This is a pattern. Mitt Romney has questioned repeatedly over the last several months whether the president understands America, whether he understands freedom he's wrapped his arms around Donald Trump, one of the originators of the birther movement, so we've seen a pattern here."
Earlier Friday, Romney joked about the controversy surrounding the president's birth certificate during a campaign stop in Michigan.
"Now I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital," Romney said.
"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."
Romney aides quickly looked to downplay the remark, insisting their candidate did not mean to question the president's birthplace.
"The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States. He was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised," a Romney spokesman said.

my radar gets a blip or two. So may times something is said that's almost a perfect American colloquialism but just off enough to make one wonder. "Gutter politics" should trip lightly from the lips of American poli-sci/ PR people. A phrase solidly embedded in American culture.
Yet, he and they come out with these little, seemingly inconsequential missteps that one is left feeling as though a WWII spy movie has just ended. One where the spy speaking perfect English learned at some special German spy school is revealed through just such a slip.
These people aren't from around here, are they?

There should be a warning that the leftist rag Hill is a training ground for 30 IQ leftists to move onto the neo-Nazi Washington Post.
Chuck Todd, the epitome of stupid, is one example.
As usual, the 'Rats deliberately revise history to suit their agenda.
Donald Trump "one of the originators of the birther movement"? Hell no. He was kind of late to the movement. Trump didn't publicly express his views on the issue until last year. That was about three years after we began following the it here on FR. And it followed many suits alleging in one form or another that Obama was constitutionally ineligible for the presidency, plus the jailing of a military officer who refused to follow orders from an allegedly unqualified commander-in-chief.
Of course, Trump is considered one of the "originators" simply because when he weighed in with his massive wealth and clout, 'Rats couldn't merely dismiss him as a "kook" as they had done with the courageous folks who had expressed similar views years earlier.
Even better. HI registrar Alvin Onaka already confirmed to AZ SOS Ken Bennett that the birth record HI has for Obama is not legally valid. The media was so eager to show that letter of verification to the public, thinking everyone would fall for its smokescreens hook, line, and sinker - but failing to realize that the LEGAL meaning of the verification is absolutely deadly to Obama.
They swallowed the Trojan horse, hook, line, and sinker. And now the legal presumption of regularity (that Onaka didn’t verify Obama’s gender, birth date, city and island of birth, mother’s name, or father’s name because he CAN’T certify them as legally true - the only reason the law allows for him to not verify those facts) means that Obama has to be presumed as ineligible, according to basic evidentiary standards.
Alvin Onaka may have the biggest balls on the planet.
Check mate.
