I’m not going to argue against that, but the fact is Akin did make that argument, when he didn’t have to. The question didn’t force him to delve into his deep personal beliefs about legitimate rape.
It was a self inflicted wound, and not the first one he has made nor would it be the last. Check out his student loan program “Stage 3 cancer”

Not that he may not be right, but not smart politically.

Most of us, including Akin, agree that his comments about rape were unwise and should never have been said. We simply believe that the normal tactics implemented when a politician makes a gaffe should be allowed to happen in his case. His apology should be accepted and he should be allowed to continue his campaign with full support. Unless someone commits a crime, engages in a serious moral failing like adultery, or diverges from the party’s platform in a major way, the party should not abandon them or kick them when they’re down.
