Yes, if Romney had indicated that women were routinely using rape as a means of acquiring an abortion, then yes, he would have to step aside.

He didn't say anything like that, but his critics seem to never stop coming up with new bizarre words to put in his mouth.

However, since you brought it up, it is true that in locations where abortion is only legal in cases of rape, women will lie about being raped in order to get an abortion. When the law is changed to require an actual police report as evidence, the rate of abortion goes down. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that that will happen, just common sense.

I’m not going to argue against that, but the fact is Akin did make that argument, when he didn’t have to. The question didn’t force him to delve into his deep personal beliefs about legitimate rape.
It was a self inflicted wound, and not the first one he has made nor would it be the last. Check out his student loan program “Stage 3 cancer”

Not that he may not be right, but not smart politically.
