Ferris Bueller would be proud.
U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5th, was absent 78 percent of the time during his committee and subcommittee hearings in the 110th Congress, according to a Hearst Connecticut Newspapers analysis that is consistent with a series of hard-hitting television ads by Murphy's GOP Senate opponent, Linda McMahon.
The 2007-08 legislative session coincided with the financial crisis, putting Murphy's campaign in a defensive posture about his attendance record.
He skipped 185 of 237 hearings overall, whereas McMahon's campaign claimed he missed 170 of 218 meetings.
Murphy failed to show up for a single hearing of the Domestic Policy Subcommittee out of 30 total during that span. The subcommittee was part of House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, on which Murphy continues to serve.
Murphy missed full committee hearings on the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, the AIG bailout and botched calls by the big three credit ratings agencies during the month of October 2008 alone.
For comparison's sake, then-U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4th, whom McMahon defeated in last week's GOP Senate primary, was present at all three of those hearings.
"Only in Congress could you miss 80 percent and ask publicly for a promotion," said Corry Bliss, McMahon's campaign manager.

Wow, he doesn’t show up for work and wants a promotion. No wonder Linda McMahon is competitive this time. In any event, Democrats have no business criticizing her after supporting Al Franken.
I seem to recall having seen that ad when it first ran 28 years ago (since Nashville covers part of the SW KY media market, from Hopkinsville to Bowling Green). That helped to send Sen. Dee Huddleston packing.
Though it could hurt him at the polls his failure to show up to work much of the time is the best possible thing he could have done for his constituents.
If you told me my rat Congressman was absent 100% of the time I’d be thrilled.
That McConnell ad is hilarious btw.
