Todd Akin to Claire McCaskill: You Should Drop Out
abcnews.go.com ^ | Aug 23, 2012

Posted on 08/23/2012 2:38:25 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

After days of ignoring Republican pleas to abandon his U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin today received an even more damning message: A new Rasmussen poll shows that Akin, who held a tidy lead before making his controversial comments about rape and pregnancy, is now down 10 percentage points (48-38 percent) to incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Never fazed, the Akin campaign shot back with an unlikely proposal.

“The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is,” Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement. “If she can’t break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.”

McCaskill, whose political career might well have been saved by Akin’s moment of madness, went online to cast doubt on the validity of the survey.

“Rasmussen poll made me laugh out loud,” she tweeted. “If anyone believes that, I just turned 29. Sneaky stuff.”

McCaskill then linked to a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claiming Rasmussen, with its ties to high-powered Republican operatives like Karl Rove, had intentionally stretched the spread in an effort to push Akin out of the race.

The final deadline for Akin to withdraw is Sept. 25. After that his name cannot be replaced on the ballot. But there is no indication he’s even considering it.

Today, he reported on his Facebook page, ”Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3. The message is loud and clear… the people of Missouri believe they should pick candidates, not party bosses or Washington elites.”

do you agree with what he said?

That rape is not a moral justification for abortion?

Yes, I am Catholic, and I believe that. Of course, I would believe that even if I were an atheist libertarian.

As for the biological response to external stimuli making conception less likely, I don't know. I've never studied the subject, but I don't think most of the people who seem so offended have, either.

What did he say that offended you?

“My dad is a hero,” Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement.

Excuse my language, but you’re a dick for opposing the Republican candidate.

Exactly. It’s all posturing by politicos who cannot and will not do anything about it. Posturing for the benefit of their single issue fans to quiesce their consciences while the abortion mills continue to operate 24x7. Why the heck say anything about it at all?

Jim — I’d love to hear your official “take” on the Akin situation.

I, for one, am in favor of supporting him against McCaskill, despite his clumsy response in that interview.

But I think you could do a lot of good by stating your opinion publicly. And by banning those who are damaging our chances of getting a Republican win in Missouri.

I didn't have an opinion one way or another about this Akin crap when it first started< But after a few days of the Akin bashing here at FR, I hope he stays in, win or lose. That post you quoted should be posted to all of these anti-Akin threads.

Romney/Ryan ticket

Yep. That's a real winning team we have there. For as bad as Obama is, the Repubs shouldn't even have to campaign. Just find it odd that all you naysayers are putting the whole election on Akin. What a bunch of crap.

My take is the baby is innocent. Always is. Akin is pro life. If he’s the candidate, I support him.

Thank you.

I agree, xzin's post should be circulated widely. Like you I didn't care much about this so-called controversy to begin with. Then I noticed how many critics were more upset about the idea that 'no abortions for rape and incest' might be seen as a GOP platform than they were about Akin's "insensitivity."

Along with a good number of posts bashing Akin for invoking God as his guide in life. I may be a heathen Buddhist but that kind of talk bothers me. I have a tremendous reverence for the principles espoused in the DoI. People who bash others for their faith in God aren't likely to be very loyal to that.

If the GOP is going to run away from the sanctity of life then they'll be running away from me. I stand in the same place I always have on that.

Actually Sarah Barracuda is very conservative and is a big Sarah supporter....A Very good person. Just doesn’t agree with Akin staying in the race. Sarah is a great FRiend here. Please just agree to disagree on the Akin situation. She does very good things here on FR. She is a very great conservative.
